A general reference

BMI does not tell muscle from fat, and it does not consider your age, sex, or health history. It is not a diagnosis: if you have questions about your weight, talk to a health professional.
Step by step

How to use it

  1. Choose your units: imperial (pounds, feet, and inches) or metric (kilograms and centimeters).
  2. Enter your weight and your height. In metric you can type centimeters (175) or meters (1.75). If you like, add your age: under 18, BMI is read differently.
  3. Read your BMI, your category, and your position on the scale. The tool also shows the healthy weight range for your height.
  4. If your weight is outside that range, you will see how many pounds or kilograms separate you from it. Remember that BMI is only a general reference.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate BMI in kg and cm?

Divide your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared. If you type your height in centimeters, the tool converts it to meters first: 70 kg and 175 cm give 70 ÷ 1.75² = 22.9.

Can I type my height in meters?

Yes. A value like 1.75 is read as meters and a value like 175 as centimeters, and the tool tells you how it read your number.

Can I see my weight in pounds?

Yes. Switch to the imperial system and enter pounds, feet, and inches. The healthy range and the difference to it are then shown in pounds.

BMI with kilograms and centimeters

This page leaves the metric system selected, as most of the world uses it. Enter your weight in kilograms and your height in centimeters (or meters): the tool calculates your BMI as weight divided by height squared.

What you get

You will see your BMI, your category according to the WHO, a scale showing where you are, and the healthy weight range for your height in kilograms. It is a general reference, not a diagnosis, and it does not account for muscle mass. If you prefer pounds and feet, go back to the BMI calculator.
