URL encoder and decoder

Turn text and URLs into a safe format (%20, %C3%BC…) or decode them, with the right mode for each case. Parse a URL part by part and edit its parameters.

Useful for a list of URLs, one per line. If you turn it off, line breaks are encoded as %0A.

Type or paste something and the result appears instantly.

Step by step

How to use it

  1. Paste your text or URL into the input. In “Automatic” mode we decode if there are sequences like %20 and encode if there are not.
  2. Pick the mode: “Component” for a value or a segment, “Full URL” to keep : / ? & = #, or “Form” if a space should be “+”.
  3. Check the result, then copy or download it. With several lines, each one is processed separately.
  4. If you have a long URL, switch to “Analyze URL”: you will see the protocol, domain, path, and parameters, and you can edit the parameters and copy the new URL.
  5. If the text has an invalid sequence like %E0%A4%A, we tell you the exact line and column.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between “Component” and “Full URL”?

It is the same difference as between JavaScript’s encodeURIComponent and encodeURI. “Component” also encodes : / ? & = #, so it is right for a parameter value or a piece of the path. “Full URL” keeps those separators so it does not break a URL that already has its structure.

Is a space %20 or “+”?

In the path and in most cases it is %20. The “+” only means a space in the form format (application/x-www-form-urlencoded), which many sites use for the query string. Choose “Form” if you need the “+”.

Why does my URL have %2520 or %252F?

It was encoded twice: the “%” of %20 became %25. Use “Decode” and, if the result still has %XX sequences, select “Decode again”. To avoid it, do not encode text that is already encoded.

What does “Malformed URI” mean?

Either there is a “%” without two hexadecimal digits after it, as in %A, or the bytes do not form a valid UTF-8 character, for example when the text was encoded as Latin-1. We tell you where it is. With “Decode what can be decoded”, the rest is converted and the invalid parts are left as they are.

How do I encode a domain with accented letters?

Domains do not use %XX but Punycode: münchen.de is sent as xn--mnchen-3ya.de. In “Full URL” mode we convert it for you, and the analyzer shows both forms.

Are my URLs sent to a server?

No. Conversion and parsing happen in your browser. It is safe to paste URLs with tokens or private data, though you should avoid sharing them afterward.

What is URL encoding

A URL can only contain a limited set of characters. The rest (spaces, accented letters, emojis, or symbols like & and =) are replaced with a “%” followed by their bytes in hexadecimal. This is called percent-encoding.

Examples

  • A space is %20 (or + in forms).
  • ü is %C3%BC and ç is %C3%A7, because their UTF-8 bytes are encoded.
  • In component mode, a=b&c becomes a%3Db%26c.

When to use each mode

  • Component: for a parameter value, a path segment, or a fragment.
  • Full URL: to fix an entire URL that has spaces or accented letters without breaking its structure.
  • Form: for POST request bodies and parameters that use “+” as a space.
