How to use it

  1. Choose what you want to find: the final price, the discount percentage, the original price, a deal like buy 1 get 1 or 3 for 2, or the total for several items.
  2. Enter the price and the discount. The percentage shortcuts (10%, 20%, 50%) fill in the discount with one tap.
  3. If you have a second discount, a fixed-amount coupon, or sales tax, open “More options”. They are applied in that order. You can also round the final price there.
  4. Read the final price and how much you save. For several purchases at once, use “Multiple items” and download the breakdown as a CSV file.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate a discount?

Multiply the price by the percentage and divide by 100 to get the savings; the final price is the price minus the savings. With 20% off $150, you save $30 and pay $120.

Do discounts of 20% and 10% add up to 30%?

No. The second discount applies to the price the first one already lowered, so the total discount is 28%. The calculator chains them and shows you the equivalent discount.

How do I find the original price if I only know the sale price?

Choose “Original price”. Divide the price you paid by 1 minus the discount: if you paid $120 with 20% off, the original price was 120 ÷ 0.8 = $150. Adding 20% to the price you paid gives the wrong answer, because the discount was taken from the original price.

In what order are the coupon and the tax applied?

First the percentage discounts, then the fixed-amount coupon, and finally the tax on the subtotal. If your store adds tax before the discount, leave the tax empty and use the price with tax included.

What happens if the sale price is higher than the original?

In “Find the discount” we tell you it is actually an increase and show you by how much.

Are the prices I enter saved?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing is sent to a server.

The discount formula

Final price = price × (1 − discount ÷ 100). With 25% off $80, the final price is 80 × 0.75 = $60 and you save $20.

Stacked discounts

“20% off plus an extra 10% off” is not the same as 30% off. Each discount is applied to the price the previous one left: 100 → 80 → 72. The total discount is 28%, because the second one works on a smaller base.

From the sale price back to the original

If you know the sale price and the percentage, the original comes from dividing by (1 − discount ÷ 100). Adding the percentage to the price you paid is a common mistake: 20% more than $120 is $144, not the $150 it really was.

Tips for comparing deals

  • Compare the final price, not just the percentage: 30% off an inflated price can cost more than 15% off a fair one.
  • Check whether the sale price includes sales tax and whether the coupon has a minimum purchase.
  • For several items with different discounts, use “Multiple items” and compare the total.
