How to play
  • The snake moves on its own; you choose which way it turns with the arrow keys, WASD, or a swipe.
  • Each piece of food adds a point and makes the snake longer.
  • The game ends if it hits a solid wall, an obstacle, or its own body.
  • The head is the square with eyes. A solid frame means solid walls, and a dotted one means wrap-around walls.
  • With “Screen reader help” on, the game announces every few seconds where the food is relative to the head.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do you play Snake?

You control a snake that moves on its own. You only choose which way it turns. Each time it eats, it grows by one square and you score a point. The game ends if it hits a wall, an obstacle, or its own body.

What is the difference between solid and wrap-around walls?

With solid walls, touching the edge ends the game and the board is drawn with a continuous frame. With wrap-around walls, the snake leaves one side and comes back in from the opposite one, and the frame is drawn dotted.

Can I play on my phone?

Yes. Swipe on the board to turn, and keep your finger down if you want to turn several times in a row. You can also turn on the direction buttons. The page does not scroll while you play.

What does progressive speed mean?

It starts slow and speeds up a little every four pieces of food, up to a maximum. The slow, normal, and fast speeds stay fixed for the whole game.

Where are my best scores saved?

In your own browser, one for each combination of size, walls, speed, and obstacles. Nothing is sent to a server, and if you clear the site data, your scores are cleared too.

Snake rules

  • The snake moves one square per step, always forward. You only decide when to turn.
  • You cannot turn backward: a 180-degree turn is ignored because the snake would hit itself.
  • Each piece of food adds a point and makes the snake one square longer. Food never appears on the body.
  • You win if you fill the whole board. With wrap-around walls, the snake leaves through one edge and comes back in through the opposite one.

Tips for going far

  • Start with the 15 x 15 board and slow speed to learn the turns.
  • Sweep the board in a spiral or a zigzag, staying close to the edges, so you do not trap yourself with your own tail.
  • Always leave an exit: before turning into a corridor, check that it has enough room for your current length.
  • If you press two arrow keys in a row, the second turn is applied on the next step: it is not lost. Use it for quick U-turns.
  • With obstacles, plan your route to the food two turns ahead and avoid narrow areas.

Options

Choose between solid or wrap-around walls, four speeds, optional obstacles, and three board sizes. Each combination keeps its own record in your browser, with no accounts and no servers. On a phone, swipe on the board or turn on the direction buttons.

Screen reader help

With the “Screen reader help” option on, the game announces every few seconds where the food is relative to the head, without flooding you with messages.
