FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is my video uploaded to a server?

No. The video is read and cut inside your browser, on your own device. Nothing is sent over the internet, so you can cut private videos safely.

What is the difference between the fast cut and the exact cut?

The fast cut copies the video without re-encoding it. It is almost instant and loses no quality, but the start snaps back to the previous keyframe, so it may begin a little earlier than you marked. The exact cut re-encodes the video and respects the frame you chose, but it takes longer.

Is quality lost when cutting?

With the fast cut nothing is lost, because the video is not re-encoded. With the exact cut the video is compressed again at a quality close to the original, so the difference is barely noticeable.

Can I remove a piece from the middle and join the rest?

Yes. Choose “Remove a selection,” mark what you don’t want, and the rest is joined automatically. You can also use “Join several segments” to keep separate pieces and combine them into one video.

Which video formats are supported?

The common ones: MP4, MOV, WebM, and MKV. The fast cut works with almost any codec; the exact cut and the preview depend on your browser being able to decode the video. If it can’t, the tool tells you.

Is there a watermark or a length limit?

There is no watermark, no sign-up, and no daily limit. Videos of up to 4 GB are accepted, because the cut copies or re-encodes the section without loading the whole file into memory. Keep your device’s memory in mind: very large videos can be slower.

Fast cut or exact cut

A video is stored as a sequence of frames, and only some of them, the keyframes, contain the full picture. That is why the fast cut, which copies the data untouched, can only start at one of them. It is ideal for trimming the beginning and end of a long recording without waiting. If you need to start at a precise frame, use the exact cut.

What you can do with this tool

  • Keep a selection: keep only what is between the two handles.
  • Remove a selection: delete a section from the middle, such as a pause or a mistake, and join what is left.
  • Join several segments: save separate pieces and combine them into a single video.
  • Split: break the video into equal pieces or into parts of a set length and download everything as a ZIP.

Tips

  • Use the I and O keys to mark the start and end while you watch the video.
  • The , and . keys step one frame back or forward.
  • To make the file smaller, run the result through Compress video after cutting.
