Voice recorder

Record voice notes, interviews, classes, or ideas with your device’s microphone. Pause whenever you like, trim when you’re done, and download as MP3, WAV, OGG, or M4A.

Your browser will ask for permission to use the microphone. The recording never leaves your device.

Step by step

How to use it

  1. Choose the format you want to save the recording in. If you’re not sure, keep MP3: it opens on any device. You can test the microphone to make sure your voice comes through.
  2. Select “Start recording” and allow the browser to use the microphone. Speak normally: the level meter and the waveform show that you can be heard.
  3. Pause and resume as many times as you need. When you’re done, select “Stop”: the recording is prepared in a few seconds.
  4. Listen to it, trim the beginning and end if needed, and download it. You can also send it to the Audio cutter or the Audio converter.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is my recording uploaded to a server?

No. The sound is recorded and processed inside your browser, on your own device. While you record, a temporary backup is kept in your browser so you can recover it if the tab closes by mistake; it is deleted when you download or discard the recording.

My browser won’t let me use the microphone. What can I do?

Select the padlock next to the page address, change “Microphone” to “Allow,” and select “Start recording” again. If you said no by mistake, the browser won’t ask again until you change it there. Also check that no other app, such as a video call, is using the microphone.

How long can I record?

There is no fixed limit. One hour of voice takes about 55 MB as MP3 at 128 kbps and about 300 MB as WAV. For long recordings, keep your device plugged in and don’t close the tab. You can switch windows or lock the screen if your device allows it, although on some phones the recording stops when the screen locks.

How do I make my voice sound better?

Speak about 6 to 8 inches from the microphone, in a quiet place, and wear headphones to avoid echo. Turn on noise reduction and echo cancellation. If your voice sounds quiet, leave automatic volume adjustment on. The level meter should move without always hitting the top.

Which format should I choose?

MP3 is the most compatible and the files are small, so it works for sharing in a chat or by email. WAV loses no quality but the files are large; use it if you’re going to edit the audio afterward. OGG Opus gives the best quality for its size, and M4A is the usual format on the iPhone. If you’re not sure, MP3 at 128 kbps is enough for voice.

Can I record the sound of a call or another tab?

This tool records only what the microphone picks up. To record the audio of a tab or of your computer, use the Screen recorder in Chrome or Edge, and then pull out the audio with Extract audio from video.

What a voice recorder in your browser is for

It is useful for leaving a quick note, saving an interview or a class, rehearsing a presentation, recording the voice-over for a video, or sending an audio message by email. There is nothing to install: you open the page, allow the microphone, and record.

Tips for a clean recording

  • Test first. The level meter tells you whether the browser is using the right microphone. If you have several, choose yours from the list.
  • Mind your surroundings. Close windows, turn off fans, and move away from bare walls, which cause echo.
  • Wear headphones. If the sound from your speakers feeds back into the microphone, you get echo; with headphones it goes away.
  • Trim at the end. Remove the silence at the beginning and the end with the trimming tool on this same page.

About the encoders

MP3 files are created with an encoder based on LAME, compiled to WebAssembly (LGPL license). If your browser can’t create M4A (AAC), the AAC encoder from FFmpeg is used, also in WebAssembly (LGPL license). Each one is downloaded only when you choose that format and runs on your device.
