Webcam and microphone test

See your camera, measure your microphone level, and hear how you sound before you join Zoom, Meet, or Teams.

Your camera and microphone are only used on this page: nothing is recorded or sent, and they turn off when you select Stop or leave. Your browser will ask for permission; choose Allow.

Camera

Off

Check that your camera works, how it looks, and which resolutions it supports.

Microphone

Off

See your voice level live, find out whether it picks up no sound, and record 5 seconds to hear yourself.

Turn the volume up to a comfortable level and choose a side: the sound should come out of that side only.

Run a test and a summary will appear here that you can paste into a support message.
The browser doesn’t ask for permission, or I have it blocked

Look at the icon to the left of the address: if the camera or microphone show as blocked, change them to Allow and reload the page. If your browser is managed by a company or school, a policy may be preventing it.

The browser has permission, but the system blocks it

Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS have their own privacy settings for the camera and microphone. Check that the browser is authorized there, close the browser completely, and open it again.

Another app is using the device

Zoom, Meet, Teams, Skype, OBS, or another tab can take the camera or microphone and not let go. Close them and try again. On many computers only one app can use the camera at a time.

The image is black or there is no sound

Look for a cover or a physical switch on the camera, and a mute button on the microphone, headset, or keyboard. Check that you chose the right device in the list: sometimes a virtual one, or one from another connection, is selected.

The device doesn’t show up in the list

Unplug it and plug it back in, switch to a different USB port (preferably one directly on the computer, not a hub), and select Refresh. If it doesn’t show up in your system either, it’s usually a problem with the cable, the driver, or the device itself.

The image is slow or low quality

Low light makes the camera drop its frames per second. Improve the lighting, close other apps that use the camera, and try a lower resolution. Cameras on USB 2.0, or shared through a hub, also perform worse.

Step by step

How to use it

  1. Select “Test camera and microphone” and choose Allow when the browser asks. You can also test each one separately.
  2. Look at the preview and the real data from your camera: resolution, frames per second, and lighting. With “Test resolutions” you see which ones it supports.
  3. Speak and watch the microphone bar: it should move and show “Good level.” With “Record 5 seconds” you hear yourself the way others would hear you.
  4. Test the speakers on each side and copy the summary if you need to send it to technical support.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is anything from my camera or microphone recorded or sent?

No. Video and audio are processed only on your device, inside this page, and are not uploaded to any server. The 5-second recording stays only in the tab’s memory and is discarded when you reload. When you stop the test or close the page, the browser turns off the camera and the microphone.

The browser doesn’t ask anything and I can’t see the camera. What should I do?

The permission was probably blocked. Select the icon to the left of the address, change Camera and Microphone to Allow, and reload the page. If the problem continues, your operating system may be blocking the browser’s access: check its privacy settings.

It says “another app is using the device.” What does that mean?

Another program or tab (Zoom, Meet, Teams, OBS, Skype) has taken the camera or the microphone and hasn’t released it. Close them, come back to this page, and select Try again. If that doesn’t help, unplug and reconnect the device or restart the browser.

What microphone level is right?

When you speak normally, the peak should land between −24 and −6 dB. Below −45 dB you can barely be heard; close to 0 dB the sound clips and distorts. The tool tells you live whether your level is low, good, or clipping.

Why does my camera show fewer frames than expected?

In low light, many cameras lower their frames per second to capture more light. Turn on a light in front of you and try again. USB cameras that share a hub or run with many apps open also perform worse.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. On mobile devices you can switch between the front and rear cameras, and the browser shows you the same permission prompt. On an iPhone or iPad, use Safari or a recent browser.

What this test checks

  • Camera: a preview with a mirror option, the device name, real resolution, measured frames per second, the maximum it supports, lighting, and which resolutions it accepts (VGA, HD, Full HD, and 4K).
  • Microphone: a live level in decibels with a held peak, background noise, capture format, and the browser’s echo, noise, and automatic gain settings.
  • Speakers and headphones: a tone on the left side, the right side, or both, to check the connection and the volume.

What the lighting reading measures

The tool takes the camera image and calculates its average brightness, from 0 (black) to 255 (white). With very little light the image looks noisy and grainy; with too much, the bright areas “burn out” and lose detail. The ideal is a soft light from the front, for example a window in front of you. A window or a lamp behind you leaves your face in shadow, even if the image as a whole looks bright.

How to read the microphone level

Decibels are measured on a digital scale whose maximum is 0 dB: the closer to 0, the louder. A normal voice sits between −24 and −6 dB. Below −45 dB you can barely be heard, and if the peak reaches 0 dB the sound clips and distorts. Background noise is measured in silence: if it comes out high, a fan, the air conditioning, or the street will bother people on your call.

If something doesn’t work

  • The camera doesn’t appear: another app may be using it. Close it and reload the test.
  • The permission is blocked: select the padlock icon next to the address and allow the camera and the microphone for this site.
  • There is no sound: check that the microphone isn’t muted and that the right device is chosen in the list.

Before a video call

Close the apps that might use the camera, choose the right device in the lists, and find a light in front of you. With the 5-second recording you can check how others hear you, and with the copyable summary you will have a clear message for the technical support of your job or school.

Privacy

The browser shows an indicator while the camera or the microphone is active. This page turns them on only when you select a button and turns them off when you stop them or leave. Nothing is saved or sent.
