Word guessing game

There is a new word for everyone every day. Try 5-letter words and use the clues to find the right one in six guesses or fewer.

Type with your keyboard or the on-screen one. Enter submits your guess. Tap a tile in the current row, or use the left and right arrow keys, to choose where to type.

You must reuse the clues you have revealed. You can only change this before your first guess.

How to play

Guess the 5-letter word in 6 tries. Each guess must be a valid word. After you submit it, each tile changes:

The B is in the word and in the right spot.

The A is in the word, but in a different spot.

The Y is not in the word.

  • Check mark and strong color: the letter is in the right spot. Dot and outline: it is in the word, in a different spot. Dash and muted color: it is not in the word.
  • Only the letters A to Z are used. There are no accents or special characters to type.
  • You can tap any tile in the current row to type there without filling the earlier ones. The left and right arrow keys move the selection, and Backspace deletes the selected letter.
  • There is a new word every day at 3:00 a.m. UTC (midnight in UTC−3), and an unlimited free mode.
  • In free mode you can choose words of 4 to 7 letters and play against the clock: 3 minutes to guess as many as you can.
  • In Archive you play the words from earlier days (they do not count toward your streak). In Challenge you create a link with your own word for someone else to guess.

How to use it

  1. Type a 5-letter word with your keyboard or the on-screen keyboard, then press Enter. Tap any tile in the current row to choose where a letter goes.
  2. Each tile tells you whether the letter is in the right spot, in the word but in a different spot, or not in the word.
  3. Use the clues to get closer: you have six guesses to find the word.
  4. When you finish, copy your result to share without giving the word away, and come back tomorrow for a new one.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

When does the daily word change?

At 3:00 a.m. UTC, which is midnight in UTC−3 (a fixed offset with no daylight saving time). Everyone sees the same word on the same day, and below your result there is a countdown to the next one.

What do the marks on the tiles mean?

A check mark and the stronger color mean the letter is correct and in the right spot. A dot with an outline means the letter is in the word but in a different spot. A dash and the muted color mean the letter is not in the word. You do not need to tell colors apart: every state has its own symbol.

What happens with repeated letters?

Tiles are marked as many times as the letter appears in the word. If the word has one R and your guess has two, only one of them is marked correct or present, and the other one is marked absent.

What is hard mode?

In hard mode you must reuse the clues you have found: correct letters stay in place, and letters that are in the word must appear in your next guesses. You can only turn it on before your first guess.

Can I type a letter in any tile?

Yes. Tap or click any tile in the current row to select it, and the next letter you type goes there. Typing moves to the next empty tile, the left and right arrow keys move the selection, and Backspace clears the selected tile or, if it is empty, the one before it. Enter submits only when the whole row is filled.

Is my progress saved? Can I play earlier days or challenge someone?

Your stats, your streak, and the game in progress are saved only in your browser. They are not sent to any server, and they reset if you clear the site data or switch devices. In Archive you play the word from any earlier day (it does not count toward your streak), and in Challenge you pick your own word, copy the link, and the other person tries to guess it. The word travels inside the link.

How the game works

The secret word has five letters, and every guess has to be a real word from the game’s dictionary. After you submit a guess, each tile is marked as correct, present, or absent, and you use that information to choose the next guess. You get six tries. The list of accepted guesses comes from a large public-domain word list, while the secret words are limited to common, everyday English with U.S. spelling, so you will not be asked to find an obscure term.

Good starting words

Begin with a word that mixes several common vowels and consonants, such as CRANE, SLATE, ROAST, or AROSE. Avoid repeating letters on your first guess, because every new letter rules out more possibilities. If your first guess leaves many tiles marked as present, use the second guess to move those letters to new positions instead of testing five brand-new letters. Think about common endings too, like -ER, -LY, -ING, and -ED.

Hard mode and repeated letters

Hard mode makes the game reuse every clue: correct letters stay fixed, and letters that are in the word have to show up in your later guesses. Turn it on before your first guess. When a word repeats a letter, the game counts each appearance: if the word has a single E and your guess has two, only one of them is marked and the other is shown as absent.

Choose any tile

You do not have to fill the row from left to right. Tap or click any tile in the current row, type a letter, and it goes in that tile. This is handy when you are sure about the fourth letter but not the first three. Use the left and right arrow keys to move the selection, and Backspace to clear a tile. Enter sends the guess only when the row is complete.

Lengths and timed mode

The daily word has five letters, but in free mode you can choose words of 4, 5, 6, or 7 letters and practice with the length you like. There is also a three-minute timed mode: new words follow one another, and you score by guessing as many as you can before the clock runs out.

Today, archive, and challenge

In daily mode there is a single word per day, the same for everyone, and your streak counts the days in a row you solve it. The word changes at 3:00 a.m. UTC. In the archive you can play a day you missed, and in challenge mode you type your own word and share a link so someone else can guess it, without anything passing through a server.
