How we count
- Word: letters and numbers in a row, with an internal hyphen, apostrophe, or number separator. “well-being”, “don’t”, and “1,234.56” are one word each; so is a URL or an email address.
- Character: what you see as a single letter or symbol, even if it uses several codes (ü, ç, an emoji, or a family of emojis).
- Sentence: text that ends in a period, question mark, or exclamation point. Abbreviations (Mr., Dr., etc.) and initials do not end a sentence.
- Paragraph: a block separated by a blank line. If there are no blank lines, each line with text is a paragraph.
- Times: 238 words per minute reading silently and 150 speaking aloud.
How to use it
- Type or paste your text in the box. You can also open a .txt or .docx file.
- Check the numbers as you type: words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, and lines.
- Select a passage to count only that part, or set a word goal and follow the progress bar.
- Review the most repeated words, then copy the statistics or download your text.
Frequently asked questions
How are words counted?
A word is a run of letters and numbers that can include an internal hyphen or apostrophe. “well-being” counts as one word, and so do “don’t” and “1,234.56”. Web addresses and email addresses also count as a single word. Standalone punctuation marks do not count.
Do punctuation and spaces count?
Punctuation does not add words, but it does count as characters. The “Characters” figure includes spaces and line breaks; “No spaces” leaves them out. Emojis and accented letters count as a single character.
How many words fit on a page?
It depends on the font and the line spacing. As a reference, a page holds about 500 words single-spaced and about 250 double-spaced. You can change that value under “More details” to calculate the pages for your own text.
How is reading time calculated?
We divide the word count by 238 words per minute for silent reading and by 150 words per minute for speaking aloud. It is an estimate: it changes with the type of text and the person.
Is my text sent to a server?
No. Everything is counted in your browser and your text never leaves your device. It is only saved if you turn on “Remember my text,” and then it stays in this same browser until you delete it.
Is there a text limit?
You can paste texts of several million characters. Very long ones are processed in the background so the page does not freeze.
What a word counter measures
Besides words, this tool calculates characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, lines, unique words, and the average word length. Everything updates as you type, with no buttons to press.
Most frequent words
The density table shows the ten most frequent words and the share each one represents. By default it ignores common English stop words (the, and, of, that…) so the terms that really matter show up. Select a word to highlight its next occurrence in your text.
Word goals and limits
- School essay: usually 500 to 1,000 words.
- Blog post: 800 words or more if you want to rank in search engines.
- Summary or abstract: about 150 to 250 words.
Set your goal in the field provided and the bar tells you how many words are left or how far you went over. You can also set a character limit for social media or meta descriptions. For finer rules (X links that count as 23, how an SMS is counted, or invisible characters), use the character counter.
