Single-spaced is about 500; double-spaced, about 250.

Type some text to see the words that repeat the most.

This is off: your text is not saved anywhere. If you turn it on, it stays only in this browser.

How we count
  • Word: letters and numbers in a row, with an internal hyphen, apostrophe, or number separator. “well-being”, “don’t”, and “1,234.56” are one word each; so is a URL or an email address.
  • Character: what you see as a single letter or symbol, even if it uses several codes (ü, ç, an emoji, or a family of emojis).
  • Sentence: text that ends in a period, question mark, or exclamation point. Abbreviations (Mr., Dr., etc.) and initials do not end a sentence.
  • Paragraph: a block separated by a blank line. If there are no blank lines, each line with text is a paragraph.
  • Times: 238 words per minute reading silently and 150 speaking aloud.
Step by step

How to use it

  1. Type or paste your text in the box. You can also open a .txt or .docx file.
  2. Check the numbers as you type: words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, and lines.
  3. Select a passage to count only that part, or set a word goal and follow the progress bar.
  4. Review the most repeated words, then copy the statistics or download your text.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How long should a meta description be?

Search engines usually show between 150 and 160 characters, although the exact cutoff depends on the device and the words. 160 is a good target so you do not fall short.

Is the cutoff exactly 160?

No. Every search engine and screen trims at a different point. That is why the reference is approximate: if you get close to 160, part of it may not be shown.

Does it work for the SEO title too?

Yes, by changing the limit. A page title should be around 60 characters. Type 60 in the field and check the length.

Measure a meta description before you publish it

The meta description is the summary that search engines show under the title. If it is too long, it gets cut off with an ellipsis; if it is too short, you miss the chance to explain the page. Writing it against a 160-character reference helps it display in full.

Type, count, and copy

With the limit loaded, the tool shows how many characters you have used and how many are left. Adjust the text until it fits, check that it includes your keyword, and copy it into your content manager. Everything happens in your browser. For the rules of each social network, try the character counter; for the rest of your text, the word counter.
