How we count
- Word: letters and numbers in a row, with an internal hyphen, apostrophe, or number separator. “well-being”, “don’t”, and “1,234.56” are one word each; so is a URL or an email address.
- Character: what you see as a single letter or symbol, even if it uses several codes (ü, ç, an emoji, or a family of emojis).
- Sentence: text that ends in a period, question mark, or exclamation point. Abbreviations (Mr., Dr., etc.) and initials do not end a sentence.
- Paragraph: a block separated by a blank line. If there are no blank lines, each line with text is a paragraph.
- Times: 238 words per minute reading silently and 150 speaking aloud.
How to use it
- Type or paste your text in the box. You can also open a .txt or .docx file.
- Check the numbers as you type: words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, and lines.
- Select a passage to count only that part, or set a word goal and follow the progress bar.
- Review the most repeated words, then copy the statistics or download your text.
Frequently asked questions
Is the count the same as X's?
It is a reference: here we count what you see on screen. X applies its own rules (each link counts as 23 characters and each emoji as 2), so leave some room if your post has links or emojis.
Do spaces count?
Yes. The main figure includes letters, numbers, punctuation, spaces, and line breaks. Below it you also get the count without spaces and the breakdown by type.
Can I use a different limit?
Yes. Type any number you like in “Character limit,” or pick another shortcut. For the official count with X's rules, use the character counter.
Counting the characters in an X post
X (formerly Twitter) limits posts to 280 characters. Going over means trimming the text or splitting it into several posts. This page has the 280 limit loaded so you can see at all times how much room you have left while you type.
More than a character counter
Besides the limit, the tool counts words, sentences, paragraphs, and reading time, and shows your most repeated words. Everything is calculated on your device. Remember that X counts links as 23 characters and emojis as 2. For those exact rules, use the character counter; to go back, open the word counter.
