Character counter

Type or paste your text and see right away how many characters it has. Pick a social network, an SMS, or an SEO title to see how much you have left or how far you went over.

You can also drag a .txt, .md, .csv, or .docx file onto the box. It is not uploaded to any server.

An emoji or a composed letter takes up one character on screen, but several UTF-16 units or several bytes.

How we count
  • Character: what you see as a single letter or symbol, even if it uses several codes (ç, ô, an emoji, or a family of emojis). Spaces and line breaks count.
  • No spaces: the total minus spaces, tabs, and line breaks.
  • X: each link counts as 23 and each emoji counts as 2, as on the network itself.
  • SMS: the text is encoded in GSM-7 (160 per message) and switches to UCS-2 (70) if it contains letters like ç, ô, or ã, emojis, or other symbols. Symbols like € or { take up two places in GSM-7.
  • Invisible: zero-width spaces, non-breaking spaces, soft hyphens, and direction marks.
Step by step

How to use it

  1. Type or paste your text in the box. You can also open a .txt or .docx file.
  2. Check the main number and the breakdown: no spaces, letters, digits, punctuation, and line breaks.
  3. Pick a limit (X, Instagram, SMS, SEO title…) or enter your own. The bar shows how much you have left.
  4. If you went over, check the cut preview and trim the text with one click, or copy only the part that fits.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do spaces and line breaks count as characters?

Yes. The main figure counts everything that takes up room: letters, numbers, punctuation, spaces, and line breaks. Below it you will also see the characters without spaces and the breakdown by type.

How are emojis and accented letters counted?

It counts what you see: an accented letter, an emoji, or a family of emojis is a single character. If you need them, “More details” lists the UTF-16 units and the UTF-8 bytes, which give larger numbers.

Why does X count differently?

X applies its own rules: every link counts as 23 characters no matter how long it is, and every emoji counts as 2. When you pick “X (Twitter)” we use those rules and show how much you have left under them.

How many characters fit in an SMS?

Up to 160 if the text uses the GSM-7 alphabet. A single letter outside that alphabet, such as ç, ô, or an emoji, is enough to switch the message to UCS-2, with a maximum of 70. Long messages are split into parts of 153 (GSM-7) or 67 (UCS-2).

What are invisible characters?

They are characters that take up room but cannot be seen: zero-width spaces, non-breaking spaces, or direction marks. They often show up when you copy from web pages or documents and can make a text “weigh” more than it looks. We detect them, and you can remove them with one button.

Is my text sent to a server?

No. Everything is counted in your browser and your text never leaves your device.

Character limits worth knowing

  • X (Twitter): 280 characters. Links count as 23 and emojis as 2.
  • Instagram: 150 in the bio and 2,200 in the caption.
  • SEO title: around 60 characters; the meta description, between 150 and 160.
  • SMS: 160 characters in GSM-7, or 70 if the text has letters like ç or ô, emojis, or other symbols.

Platforms change their limits often. The ones in this tool were last checked in September 2026; confirm the value in the app before publishing anything important.

Why the numbers sometimes do not match

Every program counts in its own way: some count bytes, some count UTF-16 units, and some count what you see on screen. Here the main figure is the one a person sees, and the details show the others so you can compare.
