FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is Lorem ipsum and what is it for?

It is placeholder text that imitates the shape of real copy without distracting with its content. Designers and developers use it to see how a page, a typeface, or a mockup will look before the final content is ready. Its words come from Latin, but they don’t form a meaningful message.

Does the English placeholder text make sense?

Each sentence is well formed, with articles, “a” and “an,” and subject–verb agreement, but it is put together at random, so it doesn’t tell a story. It is useful for testing how a design behaves with real English words, which look different from the Latin-sounding words of Lorem ipsum.

Can I ask for an exact number of characters?

Yes. Choose “Characters” and the text will have exactly that many, spaces included, and it will end with a period using whole words. It is useful for testing field limits, SEO titles, or fixed-length messages.

What is the seed?

It is the number that starts the randomness. With the same seed and the same options you always get the same text, so you can repeat a test or share the link with someone else. For a different text, select “Generate another” or type another seed.

How do I get text ready to paste into a web page?

Choose the HTML format: each paragraph comes out inside a p tag and lists inside ul and li tags. In Markdown, paragraphs are separated by a blank line and lists use hyphens. The JSON format returns an array with one element per paragraph.

Are the passages from Alice in Wonderland protected by copyright?

No. Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, published in 1865, is in the public domain. The passages come from the original work, so you can use them in mockups and projects without restrictions.

What placeholder text is for

A design with real copy is distracting: whoever reviews it starts reading instead of looking at the spacing, the hierarchy, or the typography. Placeholder text solves that, and it also takes up a space similar to real content. That is why it is used in mockups, templates, website themes, database tests, and screenshots.

Lorem ipsum, English text, or Alice

  • Lorem ipsum: the classic. Everyone recognizes it as filler, so nobody mistakes it for final content. It descends from a passage by Cicero that was scrambled until it stopped making sense.
  • English: useful when the site will be in English and you want to see how real word lengths, capital letters, and line breaks behave.
  • Alice: passages from Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, in the public domain. They repeat if you ask for a lot of text, because the available material is short.

Exact lengths

With the “Characters” unit the text is exactly as long as you ask, spaces included. It helps you check that a field accepts 160 characters, that a title isn’t cut off at 60, or that a description fits in a card. If you need to count a text of your own, use the Character counter or the Word counter.
