Online notepad
Write without creating an account: every change is saved on its own in your browser. Keep several notes, tick off tasks, protect the important ones with a password and take a copy whenever you like.
Your notes are saved only in your browser. They are never uploaded to any server.
This note is protected
Enter the password to read and edit it. It is decrypted on your device.
If you forget the password there is no way to recover the content: we do not know it and we do not store it.
- Ctrl S save now
- Alt N new note
- Alt P preview
- Alt L search
- Ctrl B bold
Your notes are saved only in this browser: we do not see them or send them to any server. If you clear the site data, they are lost; download a backup now and then.
How to use it
- Type straight into the editor: the note is created and saved on its own in your browser. Select New note (or press Alt+N) to start another one.
- Search across all your notes, pin the important ones to the top and change the order of the list to suit you.
- Use the formatting bar or write in Markdown and switch to Preview. Tasks with a checkbox can be ticked right from the preview.
- From More you can protect the note with a password, share it by link, download it as .txt or .md, or print it. Under Backup you export all of them.
Frequently asked questions
Where are my notes saved, and can I lose them?
Only in your browser, in the site’s own storage (IndexedDB). There are no accounts or servers: neither we nor anyone else can read them, which is also why they do not show up in another browser or on another device. If you clear the site data, use your browser’s automatic cleanup or browse in private mode, they are lost. Download the .json file from Backup now and then: importing it in another browser brings everything back.
How does password protection work?
When you protect a note, its text is encrypted on your device with AES-256-GCM and a key derived from your password with PBKDF2 (600,000 iterations). The password is never stored or sent anywhere. If you forget it, there is no way to recover the content. The title of the note is not encrypted.
How do I share a note with someone else?
Choose More, then Share by link. It creates a link that carries the compressed note inside it, in the part after the # symbol, which the browser never sends to any server. Whoever opens it can save the note to their own notes. Protected notes are shared encrypted: the other person needs the password.
What is Markdown, and how do I make a task list?
Markdown is a simple way to format text by typing symbols: # for headings, ** for bold, - for lists. A task is written as - [ ] Buy bread. In Preview it appears as a checkbox you can tick, and the text changes to - [x] by itself.
How long do notes stay in the Trash?
Thirty days. When you move a note to the Trash you can undo it right away or restore it from the Trash tab. After that it is deleted for good, just as if you choose Delete forever.
Does it sync between tabs, and does it work offline?
If you have the notepad open in two tabs of the same browser, changes in one appear in the other. Once the page has loaded you can keep writing even if you lose your connection; the Markdown preview is downloaded the first time you use it.
A notepad that asks for nothing
You open the page and start typing. There is no sign-up, there are no ads in the middle of your text and nothing is sent over the internet. Your notes stay saved in this browser, ready for the next time you come back, and we keep a backup draft in case you close the tab in the middle of a sentence.
What to use it for
- Quick notes: ideas, addresses, meeting summaries or the text you are going to paste later.
- Task lists: write
- [ ] task, switch to Preview and tick off what you complete. - Sensitive notes: protect with a password whatever you do not want other people using your computer to read.
- Drafts: write in Markdown and download the result as .md or .txt.
- Study material: one note per subject, sorted by date, with the most important ones pinned to the top.
A Markdown example
For a shopping note you can write a heading with # Shopping and, below it, a list with - [ ] bread, - [ ] milk and - [ ] coffee. In Preview you will see checkboxes you can tick with a tap, and the text of the note updates itself to - [x]. To highlight a word, put two asterisks on each side of it; for a link, write the text in square brackets followed by the address in parentheses.
How to look after your notes
- Download a backup now and then: it is a single file with all your notes.
- If you use your browser’s private mode or clear the site data, the notes are lost; the backup is your safety net.
- The Trash keeps whatever you delete for thirty days, in case you change your mind.
- If you forget the password of a protected note, nobody can recover it, not even us.
Privacy and limits
Because everything stays in your browser, the notepad cannot bring back what you delete from the site’s storage. Use the backup to take your notes to another device or to keep them just in case. Images that point to the internet are not loaded in the preview, so that opening a note does not tell any server about it.
