Each word comes from a list of 7,773 common English words and adds 12.9 bits. It is easy to remember and hard to guess.
A PIN is only secure if the service limits the number of attempts. For online accounts, use a long password.

It is not sent anywhere. It is analyzed in your browser.
This is an upper-bound estimate: it does not know every word in every language or the passwords that have leaked. A phrase made of common words is worth much less than it looks.
Best practices
- Use a password manager so you do not have to remember them.
- Turn on two-step verification on important accounts.
- Do not reuse the same password on different sites.
How to use it
- Pick the type: random password, passphrase made of words, or numeric PIN.
- Set the length and the characters you want to use. The password regenerates on its own with every change.
- Check the strength: we show the bits of entropy and the estimated time it would take to guess it.
- Copy the password with one click. If you generated several, you can copy them all or download them.
- Save it in a password manager: it is not kept here.
Frequently asked questions
Is an 8 character password enough?
For low-value accounts it can be, but for email, banking, or work you should use 16 or more. Strength depends on randomness and length: every extra character multiplies the number of combinations.
Is the password sent to a server?
No. It is generated with the browser’s cryptographic random generator, on your device, and it is not saved. Only your settings, such as the length, are remembered for your next visit.
Which characters does it include?
By default, uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols, with at least one of each type. You can change the length, add your own characters, or exclude ambiguous ones in More options.
What an 8 character password is good for
Eight characters is the minimum length many sites require. It is fine for secondary accounts but falls short for anything important: the current recommendation is 16 or more for email and money accounts. Length matters far more than how unusual the symbols are.
Tips for using it well
Use a different password for every account and keep them in a password manager. If a site accepts 8 characters, you do not have to stop at the minimum: try the 16 character password or the 20 character one, and go back to the full tool to adjust the characters.
