ZIP files
Put files and folders together in a single ZIP, choose how much to compress them, and protect it with a password if you need to. You can also open a ZIP (with or without a password), a TAR, a TAR.GZ/TGZ, or a GZ to see what is inside and extract only what you want. 7z and RAR files cannot be opened with this tool.

How to use it
- Choose the “Create ZIP” or “Open ZIP” tab. To create one, drag your files or folders into the box, or use “Add a folder”.
- Enter a name for the ZIP, choose the compression level (none, normal, or maximum), and turn on password protection if you want it.
- Click “Create ZIP” and download it. You will see how much the files weighed and how much the ZIP weighs.
- To open a ZIP, drag it into the other tab. You will see its contents, can preview text and images, and download one, several, or all of the files.
Frequently asked questions
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Creating and opening the ZIP happens inside your browser, using your device’s memory. Your files never leave it, so you can compress private documents safely.
How do I password-protect a ZIP?
Turn on “Protect with password” before creating the ZIP. It uses AES-256 encryption, the current standard. To open it you need 7-Zip, WinRAR, Keka, or the “Open ZIP” tab on this page: Windows File Explorer and the Mac Finder cannot open ZIPs encrypted with AES. If you lose the password, there is no way to recover the files.
How do I open a ZIP that has a password?
Drag it into “Open ZIP”. You will see the list of files, which is not encrypted, and a field to type the password. It works with AES encryption and with the classic ZIP encryption used in older archives. If the password is wrong, we tell you right away.
Why does my ZIP barely weigh less than the original files?
JPG photos, PDFs, videos, and Office files are already compressed, so the ZIP saves little space. Their advantage in those cases is sending everything together in a single file. Text, spreadsheets, and code files shrink a lot.
Can I compress a whole folder?
Yes. Drag the folder into the box or use “Add a folder”, and its subfolder structure is kept. System files such as .DS_Store or Thumbs.db are skipped. Empty folders are not included.
Can I open TAR, TAR.GZ, or GZ? What about 7z or RAR?
Besides ZIP (including password-protected ZIPs), you can open TAR, TAR.GZ/TGZ, and GZ files: their contents are listed, and you can view or extract them. 7z and RAR files cannot be opened in the browser because they require a library with a non-free license, which this site does not use. Convert them to ZIP with 7-Zip, WinRAR, or Keka. When creating, the limit is 1 GB and 5,000 files; when opening, it is 2 GB, with 1 GB per extracted file.
When to create a ZIP
A ZIP packs many files into one and, when possible, makes them smaller. It is the simplest way to send a folder by email, attach several documents to a form, or keep an organized copy of a project.
- Normal compression. Balances speed and size. It is almost always the best choice.
- Maximum compression. Takes a little longer and shrinks text, tables, and code a bit more.
- No compression. Only groups the files. It is the fastest option and works for photos and PDFs, which are already compressed.
ZIP with a password and AES-256 encryption
The password encrypts the content of each file with AES-256. File names remain visible inside the ZIP, so do not put sensitive data in the names. Choose a long password and store it in a password manager: without it, the data cannot be recovered.
Open a ZIP without installing anything
If you received a ZIP on a phone or on a computer without compression software, drag it into the “Open ZIP” tab. You can view text and images before extracting them, and save only the files you need. In compatible desktop browsers you can also save everything directly into a folder, keeping its structure.
Other formats: TAR, TAR.GZ, and GZ
The “Open” tab also reads TAR, TAR.GZ/TGZ, and GZ files, which are very common on Linux and in software downloads. Their files are listed, folders are kept, and you can view or extract them just like in a ZIP. 7z and RAR are left out on purpose: opening them requires a library under a non-free license (GPL or the unRAR license), and this project only uses permissive libraries, so the tool says so clearly instead of promising something it cannot deliver.
