Compressed PDF
How to use it
- Drop one or more PDFs into the box, or choose them from your device.
- Choose the compression level: Low keeps almost all the detail, Recommended balances size and quality, and Extreme shrinks as much as it can. If you need a specific size, turn on “Fit to a size” and type the MB.
- Select “Compress PDF.” You will see how much each file weighed and how much it weighs now, with a before and after preview.
- Download the result. If you compressed several files, you can download them all together in a ZIP.
Frequently asked questions
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. The compression happens inside your browser and the file never leaves your device. That is why it also works with private documents, such as contracts, medical reports, or invoices.
How much can a PDF be reduced?
It depends on what the file contains. PDFs with photos or scans usually shrink by 50% to 90%. Text-only PDFs are already small and shrink less. If a file is already optimized, we tell you and never hand you back a heavier one.
How do I compress a PDF to under 1 MB, 2 MB, or 5 MB?
Turn on “Fit to a size” and type the limit in MB. The tool tries stronger and stronger compression levels until it reaches it with the best quality possible. If the images alone are not enough, you can use the Maximum level.
What is the difference between the levels?
Low, Recommended, and Extreme reduce the resolution and quality of the images, but the text stays selectable and sharp. Maximum turns every page into an image: it usually gives the smallest size for scans and photos (a text-heavy PDF can end up larger), but the text can no longer be selected, copied, or searched. If it weighs more than the previous result, we keep the previous one.
Can I compress several PDFs at once?
Yes. Add as many files as you like, apply the same level, and download them together in a ZIP. Each file is processed separately and you see the savings for each one.
What happens to digitally signed PDFs?
Any change to the content invalidates a digital signature, and compressing modifies the file. If you need to keep the signature, do not compress it: we warn you when we detect that the PDF is signed.
Why some PDFs are so heavy
Almost always the weight is in the images: a phone photo can take up 4 MB, and a scanned page just as much. A PDF usually shows those images much smaller than they really are, so keeping all the extra millions of pixels is a waste. When compressing, we fit each image to the resolution it actually has on the page and save it at a reasonable quality.
Tips to shrink a file without losing legibility
- Start with “Recommended.” It is usually enough for email and forms, and the text stays intact.
- Use “Fit to a size” when a portal requires a limit: the tool picks the gentlest level that meets it.
- Grayscale saves a lot on color scans that only contain text.
- Split very long PDFs first: it is easier to send two 8 MB parts than one 16 MB file.
