- Check the before-and-after table and download the new file. The original is not changed.
Frequently asked questions
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. The metadata is read and written inside your browser and the file never leaves your device. You can use the tool with private documents.
What is PDF metadata?
It is information stored inside the file that you do not see on the pages: the title, author, subject, keywords, the program that created it, and the creation and modification dates. Search engines, document managers, and screen readers use it.
Why remove the metadata before sharing a PDF?
Because it can reveal the name of the person who made it, the company name, the program, or the exact date it was created. With “Remove all metadata” the file carries none of that.
What is the XMP packet and why does the tool remove it?
XMP is a second copy of the metadata, in another format, saved by programs like Word, Adobe, or InDesign. If you change the author but the XMP stays, some programs would keep showing the old author. That is why it is removed by default when you save; you can keep it if you need it.
Can I change the creation date?
Yes. Change or clear the creation date. The modification date is set automatically to the date and time you save, unless you turn that option off and enter the one you prefer.
What happens to the PDF’s restrictions or password?
If the PDF asks for a password, you first need to remove it with “Unlock PDF”. If it only had permission restrictions (for example, no printing), the new file is saved without them.
What a PDF stores without you seeing it
Besides the pages, a PDF stores its title, its author, the subject, the keywords, the program that created it, and the dates it was created and last modified. Many programs fill these in on their own: for example, a document exported from Word often carries the name of the computer’s user.
When it is worth editing them
- Before publishing: a clear title improves how the file looks in the browser and in search engines.
- Before sending: remove the author and the program name if you would rather not share them.
- To organize your files: a few well-chosen keywords help you find the PDF with your computer’s search.
Metadata and privacy
Removing the metadata does not change what is on the pages: if someone’s name is written in the text, it will still be there. For a complete cleanup, review the content too before you share the file. If the document is sensitive, you can also add a password with Protect PDF, or make it lighter with Compress PDF.
