FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion happens inside your browser, on your own device. Your files never leave it, so you can convert private photos with peace of mind.

Which formats can I convert?

You can open JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, AVIF, iPhone HEIC, TIFF, SVG, and ICO files. As output you can choose JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP, or ICO. We detect the real format from the contents of the file, not from its extension.

Which format should I choose?

For photos, JPG or WebP: they are small. For logos, screenshots, or images with transparency, PNG or WebP. AVIF is the lightest, but it takes longer to convert and some older programs cannot open it. ICO is for Windows icons and favicons.

What happens to transparency when I convert to JPG?

JPG does not support transparency, so transparent areas are filled with a background color. It is white by default, and you can pick black or any other color. PNG, WebP, AVIF, and GIF do keep transparency.

Do I lose quality when I convert?

It depends on the output format. PNG and BMP lose nothing. JPG, WebP, and AVIF compress with a small loss that is hard to notice at quality 80 or higher. Every time you convert to a lossy format you lose a little more, so it is a good idea to keep the original.

How many images can I convert at once?

Up to 50 per batch, with up to 50 MB each. There is no daily limit and no sign-up. When they finish, you can download them all in a single ZIP file.

One converter for every format

Instead of looking for a different page for each pair of formats, here you pick what you have and what you need. The converter recognizes the file type from its contents, so it works even when the extension is wrong.

When to use each format

  • JPG: photographs. Small and compatible with any program, but with no transparency.
  • PNG: logos, screenshots, and illustrations. Keeps sharp edges and transparency, although photos get large.
  • WebP: the modern choice for the web. It is usually smaller than JPG and PNG at similar quality.
  • AVIF: the lightest option for photos, with transparency too. Ideal if every kilobyte counts.
  • ICO: Windows icons and website favicons. It stores several sizes in one file.

If you are publishing images on a website, try WebP or AVIF and compare them with JPG: you will see a big difference in file size.
