Frequently asked questions
What is AVIF?
It is a modern, very small image format that supports transparency. More and more websites use it, but some older programs and systems still cannot open it.
Why convert it to JPG?
JPG is the most compatible format: any browser, phone, editor, and printer can open it. Converting AVIF to JPG makes sure the image displays everywhere.
Do I lose quality?
AVIF is already lossy, and JPG adds a small amount more. At quality 90 or higher the difference is not noticeable. Keep the original AVIF if you need the best quality.
AVIF and JPG: compatibility first
AVIF reaches the smallest size for photos, which is why it is gaining ground on the web. Its weak spot is compatibility: not every program can open it. JPG, on the other hand, displays anywhere. Converting AVIF to JPG is how you make sure the image opens wherever you need it.
How to do it
The output format is already JPG. Drop in your AVIF files, adjust the quality, and download them. Because AVIF was already compressed, the JPG may be about the same size or a bit larger: the advantage here is compatibility. If you are after the smallest size, look at JPG to WebP; for other pairs, open the image converter.
