Frequently asked questions
Why are BMP files so big?
BMP stores the image uncompressed: every pixel takes several bytes. That is why a picture that would be 200 KB as a JPG can reach several megabytes as a BMP.
What do I lose when switching to JPG?
BMP is lossless and JPG is not, but at quality 90 or higher the difference is hard to see. In return, the file gets far smaller. For transparency, use PNG instead of JPG.
Can I convert many at once?
Yes. Drop in up to 50 BMP files and they are all converted with the same settings. You can download them one by one or together in a ZIP.
From BMP to JPG: a smaller size
BMP is an uncompressed format: it stores every pixel as is, so files are huge. JPG compresses with some loss and achieves an enormous reduction without a difference you can see at a glance. It is the most convenient switch when file size is the problem.
How to do it
The output format is already JPG. Drop in your BMP files, choose the quality, and download the result. If the image has transparency, JPG fills it with a background color; in that case it is better to use PNG or WebP. For other format pairs, open the image converter.
