What is a HEIC file?
It is the format iPhone photos are saved in by default. It takes less space than a JPG, but outside the Apple ecosystem many programs cannot open it. Converting it to PNG makes it universal.
Why PNG and not JPG?
PNG is lossless and keeps transparency, so it is useful if you are going to edit the image or place it on a transparent background. If you prefer the smallest file, convert to JPG.
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
No. The HEIC photo is decoded in your browser, with a module that loads only when you need it. Neither the photo nor the conversion leaves your device.
