Frequently asked questions
What happens to the GIF animation?
By default the first frame is converted, because PNG is a still image. To get every frame as a separate PNG, choose “All (ZIP)” under Animated images (it needs a browser that can read animation frames).
Why convert GIF to PNG?
GIF is limited to 256 colors, so gradients show banding. PNG supports millions of colors and transparency, with better quality and no loss.
Does the PNG keep the transparent background?
Yes. The transparency of the GIF is kept in the PNG. That is useful for logos and icons that need a clean background.
From GIF to PNG
GIF only supports 256 colors, so photos and gradients look banded. PNG, on the other hand, stores millions of colors, supports transparency, and is lossless. Converting a GIF to PNG improves the quality of a still image.
Keep the animation in mind
An animated GIF is converted using its first frame unless you choose to export every frame, because a PNG is static. For still images, PNG is the best choice. If you are after a smaller size, try PNG to WebP; for other formats, open the image converter.
