Frequently asked questions
Why go back from WebP to PNG?
Many older programs and some online forms still ask for PNG. PNG is also lossless, so it works well when you plan to edit the image later without piling on more compression.
Is the PNG bigger than the WebP?
Usually, yes: PNG does not compress photos with loss. If the file ends up too large, consider keeping the WebP or reducing the PNG with another tool.
Does it keep transparency?
Yes. The transparency of the WebP is kept in the PNG. You can also choose the PNG compression (lossless, optimized, or 256 colors) in the options.
When WebP to PNG makes sense
WebP is small and modern, but not every program can open it. If a form, a print shop, or an editor asks for PNG, converting solves the problem. PNG is lossless and supports transparency, so it is a safe choice for editing.
Keep an eye on file size
A PNG is usually bigger than the original WebP, especially for photos. If you were trying to shrink the file, you may want to stay with WebP. For the reverse direction, use the PNG to WebP converter, or open the image converter to choose any pair of formats.
