Frequently asked questions
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. The cropping happens inside your browser, on your own device. Your photo never leaves it, so you can crop private images with peace of mind.
How do I crop an image to a 1:1 square?
Choose the 1:1 ratio and the frame becomes the largest square that fits. You can then move it and make it bigger or smaller without losing its shape. It is the size most profile pictures require.
Can I crop to exact sizes in pixels?
Yes. Enter the position (X and Y) and the size (width and height) in pixels of the original image. The fields and the frame update each other: if you move the frame, the numbers change, and if you type a number, the frame moves.
How do I make a circular crop?
Under “Shape”, choose “Circle”. The frame becomes a 1:1 circle and the corners are transparent, so the file is saved as PNG (or WebP), formats that support transparency. A JPG cannot have transparent areas.
Do I lose quality when I crop?
Cropping does not change the pixels inside the frame. If you save as PNG there is no loss at all; JPG and WebP are compressed again at high quality (92 by default), and the difference is barely noticeable.
Can I use the keyboard?
Yes. With the crop area selected, the arrow keys move the frame 1 pixel at a time (10 with Shift), “+” and “−” zoom in and out, “0” fits the view to the screen, and “Enter” crops and downloads.
Which aspect ratio to choose
- 1:1: profile pictures, square posts, and thumbnails.
- 4:5 and 3:4: vertical social media posts.
- 16:9: video thumbnails, presentations, and widescreen displays.
- 9:16: stories, reels, and vertical videos.
- 3:2 and 4:3: the ratio of most cameras.
- Free: to crop without any fixed ratio.
Common crops
- Profile picture: choose 1:1 and, if the site shows it round, the “Circle” shape.
- Photo for an ID or a badge: try 4:5 or 3:4 and center the face inside the frame.
- Screenshot: leave it on “Free” and enter X, Y, width, and height to keep only the part that matters.
- Photo of a paper or a scan: rotate the image if needed and then crop away the extra edges.
Tips for a good crop
The rule-of-thirds lines that appear inside the frame help you compose: place the point of interest on one of the intersections. If you also need a specific size afterward, use the resize image tool.
