Arrow keys or A and D to move, Space to fire, and P to pause. On a phone, use the buttons or drag your finger across the field.
How to play
- Move your ship and shoot the formation before it comes down to you. Every edge it touches drops it one step, and the fewer enemies are left, the faster it moves.
- Only one of your shots can be in the air at a time. The shields give you cover, but every hit chips a piece off them.
- Drones fire straight, jellyfish fire in a wave, prisms fire at you, and cores fire in a fan.
- The bonus saucer that crosses the top is worth 50 to 300 points. You earn an extra life at 1,500 points and then every 3,000.
- Every wave changes sector and formation. From the third wave on, some enemies dive at you; from the seventh, armored ones appear that take several hits.
- Every fifth wave a mothership is waiting: destroy its two cannons to expose the core, then bring it down.

How to use it
- Press Space, tap the field, or select Start to begin.
- Move the ship with the left and right arrow keys, or with A and D. On a phone, use the buttons below or drag your finger across the field.
- Fire with Space. Only one shot can be in the air at a time, so aim before you release it.
- Duck behind the shields and bring down the whole formation before it lands. Each enemy type fires in a different way.
- Hit the bonus saucer that crosses the top for extra points.
Frequently asked questions
How do you play Galactic Defense?
Your ship slides left and right along the bottom and fires upward. The enemy formation moves from one edge to the other and drops a step every time it touches an edge, and the fewer enemies are left, the faster it moves. You clear a wave by shooting them all down, and you lose if you run out of lives or if the formation reaches your ship.
How many points is each enemy worth?
The crystal drones on the bottom rows are worth 10 points, the energy jellyfish 20, the prisms 30, and the cores at the top 40. The bonus saucer that crosses the top is worth between 50 and 300 points, depending on which one shows up.
Why can I only have one shot on screen?
It is the classic rule of the genre, and it is what makes aiming matter: if you miss, you have to wait for the shot to leave the field or hit something. If you hold Space, the next shot goes out the moment the last one ends. Also, one of your shots can collide with an enemy shot and cancel it.
How do the shields work?
There are four shields made of small cells. Every hit, yours or the enemy’s, chips a piece off and leaves them damaged, and if an enemy comes down to them it wipes them out as it passes. They are rebuilt at the start of every wave, so use them for cover before they wear down.
Can I play on my phone?
Yes. The left, fire, and right buttons appear on their own on touch screens and are at least 44 pixels wide, or you can drag your finger across the field to move the ship. If you would rather not hold the fire button, turn on auto-fire in the options.
When do I earn an extra life, and where is my record saved?
You start with three lives, earn one at 1,500 points and another every 3,000 after that, up to a maximum of five. Your best score is saved only in your own browser: it is not sent to any server and it is cleared if you clear the site data.
Game rules
- The first formation has forty enemies in five rows, and later ones change shape. It moves from side to side, drops a step each time it touches an edge, and speeds up as fewer are left.
- You start with three lives. When a shot hits you, your ship explodes, comes back at the center, and is invulnerable for a few seconds.
- If an enemy reaches your ship, the game ends even if you still have lives.
- Each new wave starts a little lower and faster, up to a limit. The shields are rebuilt at the start of every wave.
- Every wave changes the scenery and the formation, from a violet nebula to a red sun with flares. Every fifth wave a boss is waiting: a mothership with two cannons and a core that has to be brought down piece by piece.
The enemies
- The crystal drone (10 points) fires a straight bolt.
- The energy jellyfish (20 points) sends a flash that wobbles as it falls.
- The prism (30 points) fires a needle diagonally toward where you are.
- The core (40 points) opens a fan of three shots.
- From wave 3 some of them dive and come back; from wave 7 there are armored ones (60 points) that take two or three hits.
Strategy tips
- Clear the side columns first: the formation takes longer to reach an edge, so you get more time before it drops.
- Fire a little ahead of your target: your shot takes under a second to arrive and the formation does not stop.
- Stay close to a shield and step out only to fire. One of your shots can cancel an enemy shot.
- The bonus saucer is worth between 50 and 300 points: shoot at it only if it does not pull you out of the cover of your shields.
Controls
Left and right arrow keys, or A and D, to move; Space or the up arrow to fire; P or Esc to pause. On a phone, use the buttons below or drag your finger across the field, and turn on auto-fire if you like. The game pauses on its own if you switch tabs, and adding ?seed= to the address lets you replay the same game.
