Type a whole number from 1 up.
Capital letters, hyphens, and “and” are all fine. Also understands “negative”, “minus”, and “point”.
How to use it
- Type the number or the amount. “1,234,567.89”, “1234567.89” and “$1,234.56” all work.
- Pick the currency (or “No currency”) and whether you want the cents spelled out or as a fraction, like “56/100”.
- Adjust the capitalization or turn on the British “and” if you need it. The result updates as you type.
- Copy the text with one click. The other tabs give ordinals (twenty-first) and turn words back into a number.
Frequently asked questions
Can I type the dollar sign and commas?
Yes. “$1,234.56”, “1,234.56” and “1234.56” give the same result. The $ sign is ignored.
How are the cents written?
In words by default: “$1,234.56” is “one thousand two hundred thirty-four dollars and fifty-six cents”. Choose “As a fraction” to get “and 56/100” instead.
What about one dollar?
The singular is used when the amount is exactly one: “one dollar”. Zero and every other amount use “dollars”: “zero dollars and fifty cents”.
Writing dollar amounts in words
Dollar amounts are written in words on checks, invoices, receipts and contracts, where the words protect against mistakes and changes to the numerals. This page has US dollars preselected, so you only have to type the amount and copy the result.
Other formats
You can capitalize the text, add the British “and”, or use a template for contracts, like one thousand dollars ($1,000.00). For another currency, go back to the number to words converter.
