    Step by step

    How to use it

    1. Type the number or the amount. “1,234,567.89”, “1234567.89” and “$1,234.56” all work.
    2. Pick the currency (or “No currency”) and whether you want the cents spelled out or as a fraction, like “56/100”.
    3. Adjust the capitalization or turn on the British “and” if you need it. The result updates as you type.
    4. Copy the text with one click. The other tabs give ordinals (twenty-first) and turn words back into a number.
    FAQ

    Frequently asked questions

Does it use “pence” for the pennies?

Yes: “one penny”, “fifty pence”. A single penny is “penny” and any other amount is “pence”.

    Is the British “and” used?

It is turned on here, so “£105” is “one hundred and five pounds”. You can turn it off in More options if you prefer the American style.

Can I use it for a cheque?

Yes. Choose the check template in More options to get the pence as a fraction over 100, like “One thousand two hundred and thirty-four and 56/100 pounds”. Confirm the format your bank prefers.

    Writing pounds in words

In the UK, cheques, invoices and legal documents write the amount in words as well as in figures. This page preselects pounds sterling and the British style, with the “and” after hundreds (one hundred and five pounds), so you only have to type the amount.

    Pence and fractions

Pence are written in words by default and can be shown as a fraction over 100 instead. For another currency, go back to the number to words converter.
