Frequently asked questions
How do I find 15% of an amount?
Multiply the amount by 15 and divide by 100. 15% of 200 is 200 × 15 ÷ 100 = 30. Enter 15 under “Percentage” and 200 under “Number.”
Does it work for any percentage?
Yes, from 0.5% up to large amounts. You can also use decimals in the percentage, for example 7.5%, and the result shows the decimal places you choose.
What if the percentage is over 100?
The result will be larger than the amount, because you are taking more than 100% of it. That is correct: 150% of 200 is 300.
The formula for a percent of a number
To find X% of an amount, multiply the amount by X and divide by 100. 15% of 200 is 30. The calculator shows the same calculation with your numbers filled into the formula.
Mental math shortcuts
You get 10% of a number by moving the decimal point one place; 5% is half of that, and 1% comes from moving the decimal point two places. With those pieces you can build almost any percentage. If you know the part and the total instead, the “What % is” mode of the percentage calculator gives you the percentage. For discounts, see the discount calculator.
