Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate an increase of X%?
Multiply the value by (1 + percentage ÷ 100). A salary of 3,000 with a 15% raise comes to 3,000 × 1.15 = 3,450.
How much is the increase in money?
It is the value times the percentage divided by 100. On 3,000 with 15%, the increase is 450. The tool shows that amount next to the total.
How do I get back to the original value?
Do not subtract the same percentage: divide the total by (1 + percentage ÷ 100). After a 15% increase, to get back to 3,000 you divide 3,450 by 1.15.
What a percentage increase is
An increase of X% takes a value to value × (1 + X ÷ 100). A rent of 1,200 with a 10% increase goes up to 1,320. The base of the calculation is always the previous value.
Going up and down does not cancel out
If a value rises 20% and then drops 20%, it does not return to where it started: 100 → 120 → 96. To undo an increase you have to divide, not subtract. If you are comparing an old value with a new one, the “Change” mode of the percentage calculator gives you the exact percentage.
