Cutout quality

Lightweight model for simple backgrounds. The first time it downloads about 19 MB (engine and model), which stay saved in your browser; after that it starts instantly.

Step by step

How to use it

  1. Drag one or more photos, choose files, or paste an image with Ctrl+V. You can load up to 20 at a time.
  2. Wait a few seconds while the model finds the subject. The first time it downloads the model, which is only needed once.
  3. Adjust the result if you like: swap the background for a color, an image, or a blur, soften the edge, or retouch with the erase and restore brush.
  4. Choose PNG, WebP, or JPG and download the image. If you loaded several photos, download them all together as a ZIP.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. The artificial intelligence model is downloaded to your browser and does the cutout with the power of your own device. Your photos never leave it, there are no accounts, and we keep no history.

What is the difference between Fast and High precision?

Fast uses a lightweight 4.6 MB model that works well with products, objects, and portraits on simple backgrounds. High precision uses a larger model, about 44 MB, that cuts out hair, fur, and tricky edges better, although it takes longer to process.

Why does the first time take longer?

Because the browser has to download the model. The High precision model is saved in your browser and loads instantly the next times, with no new download. Fast mode is so small that you barely notice it.

Can I fix a cutout that did not come out perfect?

Yes. In the Retouch tab, use Erase to remove what is left over and Restore to bring back what was cut by mistake. You can also shrink or expand the edge, soften it, and remove the halo from the original background. Zoom in to work more precisely.

What size is the image I download?

The same size as your photo: the cutout is calculated on a version of up to 2400 pixels and applied to the original image, so you lose no resolution. Only photos above 12.8 megapixels are saved at the working size, and the tool tells you when that happens. It never adds a watermark.

Which format keeps the transparency?

PNG or WebP. JPG does not support transparency, so if you choose JPG and the background is transparent, it is filled with white. If you add a color, an image, or a blur as the background, any format works.

How the automatic cutout works

This tool uses a segmentation neural network that separates the main subject from the background. The model runs inside your browser through WebAssembly, so the image does not have to be sent anywhere. A refinement step then uses the photo itself as a guide so the edges follow the real outline of the subject, and another step replaces the color of semi-transparent edges to avoid a halo from the original background.

What a photo with no background is good for

  • Online stores: product photos on a white or solid-color background.
  • Portraits and profiles: change the background of a profile picture or an ID photo.
  • Design and social media: stickers, thumbnails, and collages with the subject on a different background.
  • Presentations: logos and objects with transparency, ready to insert.

Tips for a better result

It works best with sharp, well-lit photos where the subject stands out from the background. If hair or fur gets cut off, switch to High precision. For small fixes, use the brush at a higher zoom. If you are going to upload the image to a store or a social network, run it through the image compressor afterward to reduce its size.

The first time and the next ones

The first time you cut out a photo, the browser downloads the calculation engine and the model, about 19 MB in total, and saves them on your device. You will see the progress and an estimate of the time left. From the second time on, nothing is downloaded again and everything starts instantly. High precision mode uses a larger model, about 44 MB, which is also saved; it takes longer per photo, especially on computers without a powerful graphics card.

Fast or High precision

  • Fast: enough for products, objects, and people on backgrounds that stand out well.
  • High precision: for loose hair, fur, plants, or tricky edges. It can take more than a minute per photo.

If the result is not perfect

With the Restore brush you bring back parts that were erased too much, and with Erase you remove leftovers from the background. Zoom in to work precisely and use “Compare” to see the before and after. If the photo is more than 2400 pixels on its longest side, the tool scales it down so your device does not run out of memory, and tells you before you download. For other touch-ups, try the photo editor, or add text to your cutout with the meme generator.

Several photos at once

You can load up to twenty photos: they are processed one after another and, when they are all done, you download the set as a ZIP of PNG files. If you need to stop, the Cancel button halts the process and the photos already cut out are kept. To change the file type afterward, use the image converter.
