Sleep Sounds

Tap Play and the rain starts. Add thunder, wind, waves or white noise, set the volume of each one, and schedule a shutoff so the sound fades out gently after you fall asleep. No sign-up and no ads inside the player.

Colored noise

  • It keeps playing with the screen off and shows playback controls on the lock screen.
  • On iPhone it should also be audible with the silent switch on (it uses the phone volume).
  • Night mode leaves the screen nearly black with the time, the timer, and a pause button.

Step by step

How to use it

  1. Tap Play to hear soft rain, or pick a ready-made mix such as “Night storm” or “Cabin with a fire”.
  2. Add or remove sounds by tapping them and set the volume of each with its slider. The overall volume is at the top, next to the play button.
  3. Under “Turn off in”, choose how long you want it to play: at the end, the volume fades out slowly over one to three minutes.
  4. Turn on night mode for a nearly black screen with the time and the timer, or copy the link with “Share mix”.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does anything download when I open the page?

No. The page does not request any audio until you tap a sound or Play. Each recording downloads on its own the first time you turn it on and is under 1 MB. The white, pink, and brown noise and the fan are generated on your device.

Does it keep playing with the screen locked?

On most current phones, yes. The sound goes out through a system media player, so the play and pause controls show up on the lock screen, and on an iPhone with a recent Safari it should be audible even with the silent switch on. Some battery saver modes or older browsers can cut it off: if that happens, turn off battery saving for this browser or use night mode with the screen on.

How does the sleep timer work?

Pick 15, 30, 45, 60, or 90 minutes, 2 or 8 hours, or any time you like. It counts with the device’s audio clock, so it does not fall behind even if the tab is in the background. When it ends, the volume fades out over one to three minutes and the sound turns itself off.

What is the difference between white, pink, and brown noise?

White noise has the same energy at every high frequency and sounds like an even hiss. Pink noise has fewer highs and sounds like rain or wind. Brown noise stresses the lows and sounds like a distant waterfall. None is best for everyone: try all three at a low volume.

Can I share my mix?

“Share mix” copies a link like ?mezcla=lluvia-ventana:70,fuego:40&min=30 that stores the sounds, their volumes, and the timer. Whoever opens it sees your mix ready and only has to tap Play. Your last mix is also remembered in this browser.

Where do the sounds come from, and can I use them?

The recordings are public domain (CC0) or under Creative Commons with attribution, and they were trimmed and volume-matched for this player. The Licenses page lists the author, source, and license of each one. If you want to reuse a recording, use the original we link there.

White, pink, and brown noise

White noise spreads the same energy across all the high frequencies and sounds like an even hiss, similar to a radio between stations. Pink noise has less energy in the highs and is closer to rain or wind in the leaves. Brown noise stresses the lows even more and recalls a distant waterfall. They are constant sounds with no surprises, which is why they are used to cover up background noise.

For sleeping and for focusing

Many people use a steady sound so they do not notice sudden noises from the street or the house. Research on its effect on sleep is still limited, and what works changes from person to person, so try different mixes and keep the one that feels comfortable. It is not a medical treatment: if you often sleep badly, talk to a health professional.

For studying or working, sounds without lyrics or sudden changes tend to help: brown noise with soft rain, waves, or a café. Pair it with a pomodoro timer to organize your work blocks.

Safe volume

  • Keep the volume low: it should be softer than a conversation.
  • Leave the phone or speaker some distance from the bed.
  • Avoid sleeping with headphones on all night. If you use them, keep the volume low and schedule a shutoff.

With babies, carefully

If you use noise near a baby, keep the volume very low, place the device away from the crib (a couple of meters at least), and do not leave it playing all night. If in doubt, ask your pediatrician.

How it works

Everything happens on your device. Each recording downloads when you turn it on and plays with a seamless join, starting at a different point each time so the loop is not noticeable. Thunder falls at random and the volume of each sound drifts very slowly. Want to record your own ambience? Try the voice recorder and trim it with audio cutter.
