Frequently asked questions
What counts as a business day?
A working day of the week (Monday through Friday by default) that is not a holiday. It depends on the context: retail often counts Saturday and government offices do not. You can choose the days you work.
Is the start date counted?
When counting between two dates, both dates are included by default. You can uncheck either one. When adding business days, the start date never counts: 1 business day after a Monday is Tuesday.
Which holidays are used, and how current are they?
The tool includes U.S. federal holidays for 2025, 2026, and 2027, with the date of the last check shown on the page. When a holiday falls on a weekend, the day it is observed is the one that counts. For other years the holidays are calculated from the federal rules and marked “estimated”. To confirm changes, “Check for updated holidays” queries a public source only when you ask.
Does it include state holidays or company holidays?
It uses federal holidays only. To account for a state holiday, a company closure, or an inventory day, write the date in “Work calendar and holidays”, one per line, such as 12/24/2026.
How are holidays that fall on a weekend handled?
The tool uses the day the holiday is observed. If July 4 falls on a Saturday, the holiday is observed on Friday, July 3, and that is the day removed from the count. A holiday that lands on a non-working day does not subtract anything.
Are my dates saved?
No. The calculation runs in your browser and works offline. Only the mode you chose is remembered.
Calendar days and business days
Calendar days include every day on the calendar. Business days leave out the days nobody works: usually Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. Shipping times, payment terms, legal notices, and contracts are often written in business days.
Example with U.S. holidays
From Monday, September 28, 2026 to Friday, October 16, 2026, with both dates included, there are 19 calendar days, 4 weekend days, and 1 holiday (Columbus Day, Monday, October 12): 14 business days.
Adding business days
To find when a 10-business-day deadline that starts on September 29, 2026 ends, count working days starting from the next day and skip the October 12 holiday: the deadline falls on October 14. To count calendar days instead, use the days between dates calculator.
Tips
- Check whether your deadline counts the first day. The law or the contract will say.
- Check whether Saturday is a business day for your industry.
- Banks and the postal service follow federal holidays, but many employers do not. Uncheck the holidays your company works.
