Days and hours between two dates

The time option is already on: enter a start and an end to get the difference in days, hours, and minutes.

Left unchecked, January 1 to January 3 is 2 days (like subtracting dates). Checked, the 3rd counts too, so it is 3 days.

Dates are counted as calendar days, with no daylight saving time or time zones, so the result does not change depending on where you are.

Step by step

How to use it

  1. Type the start date and the end date as mm/dd/yyyy, or pick them from the calendar. The Today button fills in the current date.
  2. Decide whether to include the end date. Left unchecked, days are counted the way a date subtraction does it.
  3. Read the total number of days and the breakdown in years, months, weeks, hours, and minutes. If the end date is in the future, you see how many days are left.
  4. Copy the result, or copy the link to share the same dates with someone else.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What time format does it accept?

Both 12-hour and 24-hour time: 8:30 AM, 2:15 PM, or 14:15. You can enter a start time and an end time, even if one is in the morning and the other in the early hours of the next day.

Does it work for shifts that cross midnight?

Yes. With the start and end dates and their times, the tool calculates the exact time, for example from 10:00 PM to 2:00 AM the next day: 4 hours.

Why is “Include the end date” turned off?

Mixing a day count with hours would give an ambiguous result. With the time option on, the difference is measured in exact time, which is what you need here.

Measuring an interval to the exact time

When the time of day matters, subtracting only the dates is not enough. With the time option on, the tool subtracts the start date and time from the end date and time and returns days, hours, and minutes, leaving out any unit that is zero.

Typical uses

It is useful for workdays, night shifts that run from one day into the next, trips with a departure and an arrival time, or to measure how long a process took. Enter the two dates and their times and the result appears right away. For the difference in calendar days, use the days between dates calculator.
