Days between dates calculator

Enter two dates and get the number of days between them right away, broken down into years, months, weeks, and hours. It also works as a countdown.

Left unchecked, January 1 to January 3 is 2 days (like subtracting dates). Checked, the 3rd counts too, so it is 3 days.

Dates are counted as calendar days, with no daylight saving time or time zones, so the result does not change depending on where you are.

Step by step

How to use it

  1. Type the start date and the end date as mm/dd/yyyy, or pick them from the calendar. The Today button fills in the current date.
  2. Decide whether to include the end date. Left unchecked, days are counted the way a date subtraction does it.
  3. Read the total number of days and the breakdown in years, months, weeks, hours, and minutes. If the end date is in the future, you see how many days are left.
  4. Copy the result, or copy the link to share the same dates with someone else.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does the result include the end date?

Not by default: between January 1 and January 3 there are 2 days, just like subtracting the dates. If you turn on “Include the end date,” all three days from the 1st to the 3rd are counted, which is common for rentals, deadlines, or days of leave.

How is the breakdown in years, months, and days calculated?

Full months are added from the start date, respecting the last day of each month, and whatever is left is counted in days. From January 31 to March 1 is 1 month and 1 day, because one month after January 31 is the last day of February.

What happens if the end date is earlier than the start date?

It is not an error: we show the difference as “N days ago” along with a notice that the dates are reversed. The “Swap dates” button puts them in order with one click.

Does it account for leap years and daylight saving time?

Leap years, yes: from February 28 to March 1, 2028 there are 2 days because that year has a February 29. Daylight saving time does not matter, because dates are counted as calendar days, not as hours.

Can I count only business days?

Not on this page: every calendar day counts here, Saturdays and Sundays included. For deadlines that skip weekends and holidays, use the business days calculator.

Are the dates I enter saved?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing is sent to a server. Only if you copy the link do the dates travel inside that address, so whoever opens it sees the same thing.

How to count the days between two dates

The difference in days is the end date minus the start date. From January 1 to December 31, 2026, there are 364 days; if you also count the end date, it is 365. The tool does this with calendar days, so it does not depend on time zones or daylight saving time.

Worked examples

  • From March 15 to April 20: 36 days, or 1 month and 5 days.
  • A 30-day trial that starts on June 1: June 1 to July 1 is 30 days, so the trial ends on July 1 if you count 30 days after the start. If June 1 counts as day 1, the last day is June 30: turn on “Include the end date” to see it.
  • A 90-day deadline: count from the day after it starts; if the deadline includes the first day, turn on “Include the end date” and compare.

Countdown

Set today's date as the start and the date of an event as the end. The result shows how many days are left and which day of the week it falls on. Once the date has passed, the same calculation shows how many days have gone by.

Include the end date or not?

Subtracting two dates counts the days that pass between them: from March 10 to March 15 is 5 days, just like 5 hotel nights. If both the first and the last day count, as in a daily rental or a course with daily attendance, it is 6. Turn on “Include the end date” when your case counts both ends.

Common periods in days

  • 30 days: roughly a month; real months have between 28 and 31 days.
  • 90 days: three months or a quarter, which has 89 to 92 days depending on the period.
  • 180 days: about six months.
  • 365 days: a common year; leap years have 366.

Leap years

A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, except century years that are not divisible by 400: 2028 is one, 2100 is not, and 2000 was. That is why February 28 to March 1 is 2 days in 2028 and 1 day in 2027. The tool takes this into account without you doing anything.

More examples

  • From September 1 to December 25: 115 days, or 3 months and 24 days.
  • From one year to the next: from January 1, 2026 to January 1, 2027 is 365 days.

Calendar days and business days

Calendar days include Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. Many procedures and legal deadlines are counted in business days, which skip weekends and holidays, so check which kind your deadline uses.
