Capybara Crossing
A capybara with a tangerine on its head, a 3D world of blocks that generates itself without end, and a flood coming up from behind. Hop one square at a time, dodge the traffic, jump from log to log, and score a point for every new row.
Tap the screen or press the up arrow to move forward one square; swipe or use the arrow keys to go sideways and back. Cross streets, rivers and train tracks without getting caught by the traffic or the flood.
Tips
- Each tap is a one-square hop. Holding the key down does not repeat it, and you can queue the next hop while you are hopping.
- On the street, dodge cars, buses and trucks; on the river, jump onto logs and water hyacinth rafts, which carry you along: if they take you off the board, you lose.
- When the alarm rings and the track lights flash, a train is about to pass. If you stand still or go back too far, the water rises from behind.
- Mate gourds are worth 5 bonus points. Each new row is worth 1. Pause with P or Esc.

Frequently asked questions
How do you play Capybara Crossing?
Tap the screen or press the up arrow to make the capybara hop forward one square. Use the arrow keys or WASD to go sideways and back; on a phone, swipe in the direction you want to go. Cross streets, rivers and train tracks to get farther each time.
How does scoring work?
You earn a point for every new row you reach. Each mate gourd you collect adds 5 more points. Your score is the sum of both, and your best one is saved in your browser along with a chart of your last games.
What happens if I stand still?
A flood rises from behind: it climbs on its own, a little faster the farther you get, and it catches you if you stay put or go back too far. It never falls far behind, so it pays to keep a steady pace, but also to look carefully before every hop.
How do I cross the river and the train tracks?
In the river you have to land on a log or a water hyacinth raft: they carry you with the current, and if they take you off the board or you fall in, the game ends. On the tracks, when the alarm rings, the lights flash and the gate comes down, a train is about to pass; wait until it is gone before crossing.
Does the difficulty change, and can I always move forward?
Yes. As you advance there is more and faster traffic, wider rivers and more frequent trains, up to a cap. Every so often the setting also changes (neighborhood, highway, delta and countryside). In every case each row has at least one possible path using the game’s real rules.
Does it work on a phone, and at night?
Yes. You play with taps and swipes, or with the big buttons that show up on touch screens. With the dark theme it turns into night: the street lamps and vehicle lights come on. The world is drawn in 3D with blocks; if your browser does not support WebGL, a flat drawing is used and plays the same. If your device asks for less motion, the screen shake and the particles are reduced.
Capybara Crossing rules
- The capybara moves one square per hop: forward, back, left or right. The world generates ahead of you, without end.
- There are four kinds of rows: grass (with trees and other obstacles that block the way), street (cars, buses and trucks), river (logs and rafts that carry you) and railway tracks.
- The game ends if a vehicle hits you, a train runs you over, you fall in the water, the current takes you off the board, or the flood catches you.
- You score a point for every new row and 5 for every mate gourd. You can go back up to four rows from the farthest one you reached.
The flood, the settings and the difficulty
A few seconds after your first hop, a flood starts rising from behind. It never stays more than a few rows away, so standing still or going back too far means losing. As you advance everything gets tougher, up to a cap: vehicles go faster with less space between them, streets have more lanes, rivers are wider and trains come more often. About every forty rows the setting changes: the neighborhood with buses and street lamps, the highway with trucks, the delta with rivers and coral trees, and the countryside with hay bales, tracks and dirt roads. At night the street lamps, the vehicle headlights and the gate lights switch on. Rows are generated with one simple rule: there is always a possible path, and that is checked with the same movement rules you use when you play.
Tips for going further
- Look at the row ahead before you hop. It is easier to wait on the grass than to correct in the middle of a street.
- You can queue the next hop while you are hopping: it saves time on several streets in a row.
- On the river, watch which way each row of logs is going: neighboring rows go in opposite directions, so one is always passing under you.
- When the track lights flash, the train arrives in about a second and a half. Wait until it has fully passed.
- Mate gourds are sometimes a bit off the path. When it is safe, taking a detour for one is worth as much as five rows.
- If you add a fixed seed to the address (
?seed=), you will always see the same world, which is handy for practicing a stretch or racing a friend.
Controls
On a computer use the arrow keys or WASD (the space bar and Enter also move forward) and keep in mind that holding a key down does not repeat the hop. On a phone or tablet, tap to move forward, swipe to go sideways or back, or use the buttons below. Pause with P, Esc, or the Pause button; the game also pauses if you switch tabs or windows. Your best score is saved in your browser.
