What counts as a federal holiday
These are the legal public holidays for federal employees under 5 U.S.C. 6103. Banks, the post office, the stock market, states, schools, and private employers each set their own days off and can differ. Check with them directly.Where other schedules differ
- Federal Reserve Banks. When a holiday falls on a Saturday, the Federal Reserve Banks are open the Friday before (the Board of Governors is closed); when it falls on a Sunday, all Federal Reserve offices are closed the Monday after. So the Banks are open on Friday, July 3, 2026, although it is a federal holiday. Source: Federal Reserve Banks holiday schedule. Your own bank sets its own hours.
- New York Stock Exchange. It closes on Good Friday, which is not a federal holiday, and it stays open on Columbus Day and Veterans Day, which are. It observes Independence Day on Friday, July 3, 2026, and Juneteenth on Friday, June 18, 2027. When January 1 falls on a Saturday (2028), it observes no New Year’s Day holiday. Source and verification
Verified on October 8, 2026. Source: U.S. Office of Personnel Management, Federal Holidays. The dates are computed by rule and checked against its table for 2026, 2027, and 2028. Rules: 5 U.S.C. 6103, Holidays (U.S. Code) and Executive Order 11582. Inauguration Day (January 20 every fourth year) is a holiday only for some federal employees in the Washington, D.C., area, so it is not in the list.

Frequently asked questions
How many federal holidays are there?
Eleven: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. They are the legal public holidays in 5 U.S.C. 6103.
What happens when a federal holiday falls on a weekend?
For most federal employees, a holiday on a Saturday is observed the Friday before, and a holiday on a Sunday is observed the Monday after. In 2026, July 4 is a Saturday, so the observed day is Friday, July 3.
Is Presidents Day a federal holiday?
Yes, but the law calls it Washington’s Birthday. It falls on the third Monday in February: February 16 in 2026 and February 15 in 2027.
Is Juneteenth a federal holiday?
Yes. Juneteenth National Independence Day, June 19, has been a federal holiday since 2021. It is observed Friday, June 19, 2026, and Friday, June 18, 2027, because June 19, 2027 is a Saturday.
Are banks and the stock market closed on every federal holiday?
Not exactly. Federal Reserve Banks stay open the Friday before a Saturday holiday, and the New York Stock Exchange stays open on Columbus Day and Veterans Day but closes on Good Friday. Your own bank sets its own schedule, so check with it.
Do these dates apply to my employer?
The 11 holidays are the ones the law sets for federal employees. State governments, schools, and private employers choose their own days off, so confirm your schedule with your employer.
The 11 federal holidays
Congress lists the legal public holidays in 5 U.S.C. 6103. Six follow a weekday rule and always fall on a Monday or Thursday: Martin Luther King Jr. Day (third Monday in January), Washington’s Birthday (third Monday in February), Memorial Day (last Monday in May), Labor Day (first Monday in September), Columbus Day (second Monday in October), and Thanksgiving Day (fourth Thursday in November). Five have a fixed date: New Year’s Day (January 1), Juneteenth (June 19), Independence Day (July 4), Veterans Day (November 11), and Christmas Day (December 25).
The weekend rule
Under 5 U.S.C. 6103(b) and Executive Order 11582, a fixed-date holiday that falls on a Saturday is observed the Friday before, and one that falls on a Sunday is observed the Monday after. This is why the calendar looks different from year to year: in 2027, Juneteenth (Saturday) is observed on Friday, June 18, Independence Day (Sunday) on Monday, July 5, and Christmas Day (Saturday) on Friday, December 24.
A holiday observed in the previous year
When January 1 is a Saturday, the observed day is Friday, December 31 of the year before. That happens for 2028: New Year’s Day 2028 is observed on Friday, December 31, 2027.
Observed date or actual date?
The observed date is the day most federal employees get off. Employees whose regular workweek is not Monday through Friday follow different rules for weekend holidays, so check with your agency. Inauguration Day, January 20 every fourth year, is a holiday only for some federal employees in the Washington, D.C., area, so it is not in the list of 11.
Other schedules differ
Federal Reserve Banks, the New York Stock Exchange, states, schools, and private employers publish their own calendars. For example, the Federal Reserve Banks are open on Friday, July 3, 2026, even though it is a federal holiday. The tool shows the source and the check date for each figure.
