What counts as a federal holiday

These are the legal public holidays for federal employees under 5 U.S.C. 6103. Banks, the post office, the stock market, states, schools, and private employers each set their own days off and can differ. Check with them directly.
  • Federal Reserve Banks. When a holiday falls on a Saturday, the Federal Reserve Banks are open the Friday before (the Board of Governors is closed); when it falls on a Sunday, all Federal Reserve offices are closed the Monday after. So the Banks are open on Friday, July 3, 2026, although it is a federal holiday. Source: Federal Reserve Banks holiday schedule. Your own bank sets its own hours.
  • New York Stock Exchange. It closes on Good Friday, which is not a federal holiday, and it stays open on Columbus Day and Veterans Day, which are. It observes Independence Day on Friday, July 3, 2026, and Juneteenth on Friday, June 18, 2027. When January 1 falls on a Saturday (2028), it observes no New Year’s Day holiday. Verified on October 8, 2026. Schedules are published by each institution and can change.

Verified on October 8, 2026. Source: U.S. Office of Personnel Management, Federal Holidays. The dates are computed by rule and checked against its table for 2026, 2027, and 2028. Rules: 5 U.S.C. 6103, Holidays (U.S. Code) and Executive Order 11582. Inauguration Day (January 20 every fourth year) is a holiday only for some federal employees in the Washington, D.C., area, so it is not in the list.
