Frequently asked questions
Is my form uploaded to a server?
No. What you type is saved into the PDF inside your browser, on your own device. Neither the file nor what you write ever leaves it, and you do not need to sign up.
What do I do if my PDF has no fields to fill in?
Many PDFs are just an image or fixed text, with no fields. There is nothing to fill in there, but you can write on top with “Edit PDF”: add text boxes where you need them, checkmarks, and signatures. When the tool finds no fields, it tells you and takes you there with your file.
What does “Flatten the form” mean?
When you flatten, what you typed becomes part of the page and the fields no longer exist: the document can no longer be edited as a form. It is the best choice for sending or printing. Without flattening, the PDF keeps its fields and you can change them later with any PDF reader.
Can I fill in a password-protected PDF?
Not directly: a protected PDF cannot be modified until the protection is removed. If you know the password, remove the protection first with “Unlock PDF” and come back here with the resulting file.
Where do the field names come from?
From the help text the author wrote on each field or, if there is none, from the text you see next to it on the page. If the form has neither, the internal name of the field is shown. Fields appear in reading order: page by page, from top to bottom.
Which forms cannot be filled in?
Dynamic Adobe forms (XFA) only display fully in Acrobat and have no standard fields; submit buttons and digital signature fields cannot be filled in here either. If the document also includes ordinary fields, those can be filled in. To add your drawn or typed signature, use “Sign PDF” once the form is filled in.
Fillable PDF forms
A PDF form has real fields: text boxes, checkboxes, option buttons, and drop-down lists. They can be completed without printing the document or running it through a design program. This tool shows all the fields in a list ordered the way the document reads and saves what you type inside the PDF itself.
Editable or flattened
- Editable: the PDF keeps its fields. It works if the other person also has to complete a part, or if you want to fix something later.
- Flattened: the data is fixed on the page, as if it were printed. It is best for sending, archiving, or printing.
A practical case: the form you have to complete by hand
Sometimes it is better not to fill in the fields on screen, but to print the blank form and complete it by hand or take it in signed. In that case, open the PDF, check that the fields were detected, and download without typing anything: the document stays intact. If your printer prints it with a gray background or the lines are hard to read, run it through PDF to grayscale or Compress PDF first to cut down on ink.
After filling in the form
- Is your signature missing? Use Sign PDF.
- Is it too big to email? Try Compress PDF.
- No fields? Write on top with Edit PDF.
