This PDF is protected
To edit it, each page is converted to an image when you save. The text will no longer be selectable. If you have the unprotected version, use that instead.Redacted areas
Pages with redacted areas are saved as images so that what was underneath is gone for good. On those pages the text will no longer be selectable.Done
How to use it
- Drag your PDF into the box or select it from your device. It opens in your browser and is never uploaded.
- Choose a tool from the bar (text, image, highlight, cover up, shapes, drawing, signature) and select or drag on the page. Select any object to move it or change its size, color, or font.
- To change text that is already in the document, use “Edit text”: it covers the line and lets you type the new text on top. To permanently remove sensitive data, use “Redact.”
- In the thumbnail strip you can rotate, move, delete, or add blank pages. When you are done, select “Apply and download.”
Frequently asked questions
Is my file uploaded to a server?
No. The PDF is opened and edited inside your browser, on your own device. Neither the document nor your changes pass through our servers, so you can work with contracts, invoices, or personal documents.
Can I change the text that is already in the PDF?
Partly. A PDF does not store paragraphs the way a word processor does, so the text cannot be rewritten in place. With “Edit text” you select a line, the tool covers it with the background color, and a box opens with the same text so you can change it. It works well for fixing a name, a date, or an amount; to rework a whole paragraph, it is better to edit the source file. Keep in mind that the original text is covered but still inside the file. If it is sensitive, remove it with “Redact.”
What is the difference between “Cover up” and “Redact”?
“Cover up” places a rectangle on top: it looks white (or whatever color you choose), but the original text is still inside the file and can be copied or recovered. “Redact” removes the content for real: pages with redacted areas are saved as images, so what was underneath no longer exists. Use it for ID numbers, bank accounts, or other personal data.
Do I lose quality or selectable text?
No. Your original document stays as it is, and what you add is drawn on top as text and vector graphics. The only exception is pages with redacted areas (and password-protected PDFs), which are saved as images; on those pages the text is no longer selectable.
Can I type accented letters and other languages?
Yes. With the Sans, Serif, and Mono fonts, text with accented letters and symbols such as € or £ comes out perfectly. If you type letters those fonts do not have, such as Cyrillic or Greek, a fallback font is used automatically.
Can I undo a change?
Yes. Undo and Redo work with the buttons on the bar or with Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Y, even if you deleted or moved pages. Your changes are kept as long as you do not close or reload the page, and we warn you if you try to leave with changes you have not downloaded.
What you can do with the editor
- Type text anywhere, with your choice of font, size, color, bold, italic, and alignment.
- Add images and signatures, today’s date, and checkmarks or crosses for forms.
- Highlight and draw freehand, or trace rectangles, ellipses, lines, and arrows.
- Cover up or redact parts of the document.
- Organize pages: rotate them, move them, delete them, or insert blank sheets.
Covering is not the same as deleting
A white rectangle only hides what is underneath: the text is still inside the file and anyone can copy it. If you are going to share a document with data that must not be seen, use Redact. That tool turns the affected pages into images with the black already burned in, and the redacted content disappears from the file.
Tips
- To move an object precisely, select it and use the arrow keys (hold Shift to move ten points at a time).
- With “All pages” you copy a text, an image, or a signature to the same position on the rest of the document, which is handy for page numbers or stamps.
- If every page needs a watermark or automatic numbering, use Add watermark to PDF or Add page numbers to PDF.
- To sign a document, try Sign PDF. To put several files together first, use Merge PDF, and if the result is too big, compress it.
