High school GPA calculator
The calculator already has a sample high school year, with 1 credit for a full-year course and 0.5 for a half-year one. Replace it with your courses and mark the honors and AP/IB classes.

How it’s calculated
- Formula
GPA = Σ (grade points × credits) ÷ Σ credits- With your numbers
—
Weighted GPA adds the bonus of honors and AP/IB courses to every grade except an F. Cumulative GPA divides all quality points by all credits: it is not the average of the term GPAs.
What GPA do I need?
Uses the courses and earlier record above as your current GPA.
Enter the GPA you want and the credits you will take.
An estimate, not your official GPA
This calculator uses the standard formula and the scale below. Your school sets its own points, bonuses, rounding, and rules for repeated courses, transfer credits, and pass/fail grades. Check your transcript or registrar for the official number.Grading scale
There is no official GPA scale. These are the points most U.S. schools use on a 4.0 scale, with the percentages that usually go with each letter. The percentages are a typical chart, not a rule. Edit the points and bonuses to match your school: they are used in every calculation above.
| Letter | Typical percentage | Points |
|---|---|---|
| A+ | 97–100% | |
| A | 93–96% | |
| A- | 90–92% | |

How to use it
- Add each course with its letter grade and credits. Use the course type for honors or AP/IB classes.
- Add another semester if you want to see each term and the total.
- If you already have a GPA from earlier terms, enter it with the credits it covers to get your cumulative GPA.
- Open the goal planner, enter the GPA you want and the credits you will take, and read the GPA you need.
- Change the grading scale if your school uses different points. Your entries stay on this device.
Frequently asked questions
How is a high school GPA calculated?
Each letter becomes grade points, multiplied by the course credits, and the total is divided by the credits. In the sample year, 20.00 ÷ 5.5 = 3.64 unweighted.
How many credits is a high school class worth?
Many schools give 1 credit to a full-year course and 0.5 to a half-year one, but some use other numbers. Use the credits on your transcript or course catalog.
Should I use the weighted or the unweighted GPA?
Use the one the form asks for. Colleges and scholarships may ask for either, and some recalculate from your grades on their own scale. This page shows both.
A high school year in numbers
High schools usually count each course for 1 credit per year or 0.5 per semester, so every class weighs about the same unless it has half the credits. Honors, AP, and IB classes may earn a bonus in the weighted GPA, which is why the sample year below has two numbers.
The sample year, course by course
| Course | Grade | Credits | Type | Points | Weighted points | Quality points | Weighted quality points |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| English 11 Honors | A- | 1 | Honors | 3.7 | 4.2 | 3.70 | 4.20 |
| AP U.S. History | B+ | 1 | AP or IB | 3.3 | 4.3 | 3.30 | 4.30 |
| Precalculus Honors | B | 1 | Honors | 3.0 | 3.5 | 3.00 | 3.50 |
| AP Biology | A | 1 | AP or IB | 4.0 | 5.0 | 4.00 | 5.00 |
| Spanish III | A | 1 | Regular | 4.0 | 4.0 | 4.00 | 4.00 |
| Physical Education | A | 0.5 | Regular | 4.0 | 4.0 | 2.00 | 2.00 |
5.5 credits and 20.00 quality points make a 3.64 unweighted GPA. With the bonus on the four honors and AP/IB courses, it is 4.18 weighted.
What one grade changes
In the sample year, each full-year course carries 18.18% of the credits, so one grade has a visible effect. Raising the B+ in AP U.S. History to an A would lift the unweighted GPA to3.76. Try your own changes in the GPA calculator.
