Semester GPA calculator
The calculator already has a sample semester with five courses. Replace it with your courses to see your GPA for the term, and add another semester to compare.

GPA by term
| Term | Credits | Unweighted | Weighted |
|---|
How it’s calculated
- Formula
GPA = Σ (grade points × credits) ÷ Σ credits- With your numbers
—
Weighted GPA adds the bonus of honors and AP/IB courses to every grade except an F. Cumulative GPA divides all quality points by all credits: it is not the average of the term GPAs.
What GPA do I need?
Uses the courses and earlier record above as your current GPA.
Enter the GPA you want and the credits you will take.
An estimate, not your official GPA
This calculator uses the standard formula and the scale below. Your school sets its own points, bonuses, rounding, and rules for repeated courses, transfer credits, and pass/fail grades. Check your transcript or registrar for the official number.Grading scale
There is no official GPA scale. These are the points most U.S. schools use on a 4.0 scale, with the percentages that usually go with each letter. The percentages are a typical chart, not a rule. Edit the points and bonuses to match your school: they are used in every calculation above.
| Letter | Typical percentage | Points |
|---|---|---|
| A+ | 97–100% | |
| A | 93–96% | |
| A- | 90–92% | |
| B+ | 87–89% | |
| B | 83–86% | |
| B- | 80–82% | |
| C+ | 77–79% | |
| C | 73–76% | |
| C- | 70–72% | |
| D+ | 67–69% | |
| D | 63–66% | |
| D- | 60–62% | |
| F | below 60% |
How to use it
- Add each course with its letter grade and credits. Use the course type for honors or AP/IB classes.
- Add another semester if you want to see each term and the total.
- If you already have a GPA from earlier terms, enter it with the credits it covers to get your cumulative GPA.
- Open the goal planner, enter the GPA you want and the credits you will take, and read the GPA you need.
- Change the grading scale if your school uses different points. Your entries stay on this device.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my semester GPA?
Multiply each grade’s points by the credits, add them up, and divide by the semester’s credits. The sample term is 53.00 ÷ 15 = 3.53.
Is semester GPA the same as cumulative GPA?
No. The semester GPA covers one term only. The cumulative GPA covers every term on your record and changes more slowly.
Can I compare two semesters?
Yes. Use “Add semester” in the calculator. Each term shows its own GPA and the table shows them side by side with the total.
Your semester GPA
The semester GPA, sometimes called term GPA, uses only the courses from one term. Each course counts in proportion to its credits, so a 4-credit lab moves it more than a 2-credit elective.
A sample semester
| Course | Grade | Credits | Points | Quality points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Statistics | B+ | 3 | 3.3 | 9.90 |
| Chemistry | B | 4 | 3.0 | 12.00 |
| World History | A- | 3 | 3.7 | 11.10 |
| Spanish II | A | 3 | 4.0 | 12.00 |
| Art Appreciation | A | 2 | 4.0 | 8.00 |
53.00 quality points over 15 credits is a 3.53 semester GPA.
What one 3-credit course does to a term of A’s
Suppose every other course earns an A. The GPA of the term depends on how many credits it has:
| Credits in the term | One B | One C | One F |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12 credits | 3.75 | 3.50 | 3.00 |
| 15 credits | 3.80 | 3.60 | 3.20 |
| 18 credits | 3.83 | 3.67 | 3.33 |
A heavier load softens one low grade. Compare your terms side by side in the GPA calculator.
