Weighted GPA calculator
The calculator already has a sample schedule with honors and AP courses. Replace it with your own courses to see your weighted and unweighted GPA, with the bonus points you choose.

How it’s calculated
- Formula
GPA = Σ (grade points × credits) ÷ Σ credits- With your numbers
—
Weighted GPA adds the bonus of honors and AP/IB courses to every grade except an F. Cumulative GPA divides all quality points by all credits: it is not the average of the term GPAs.
What GPA do I need?
Uses the courses and earlier record above as your current GPA.
Enter the GPA you want and the credits you will take.
An estimate, not your official GPA
This calculator uses the standard formula and the scale below. Your school sets its own points, bonuses, rounding, and rules for repeated courses, transfer credits, and pass/fail grades. Check your transcript or registrar for the official number.Grading scale
There is no official GPA scale. These are the points most U.S. schools use on a 4.0 scale, with the percentages that usually go with each letter. The percentages are a typical chart, not a rule. Edit the points and bonuses to match your school: they are used in every calculation above.
| Letter | Typical percentage | Points |
|---|---|---|
| A+ | 97–100% | |
| A | 93–96% | |
| A- | 90–92% | |

| D+ | 67–69% | |
| D | 63–66% | |
| D- | 60–62% | |

How to use it
- Add each course with its letter grade and credits. Use the course type for honors or AP/IB classes.
- Add another semester if you want to see each term and the total.
- If you already have a GPA from earlier terms, enter it with the credits it covers to get your cumulative GPA.
- Open the goal planner, enter the GPA you want and the credits you will take, and read the GPA you need.
- Change the grading scale if your school uses different points. Your entries stay on this device.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate a weighted GPA?
Add the bonus for the course type to each grade’s points (commonly +0.5 for honors and +1.0 for AP or IB), multiply by the credits, add everything up, and divide by the total credits. The sample schedule above works out to 4.18.
Can a weighted GPA be higher than 4.0?
Yes. With a +1.0 AP bonus, an A in an AP class is worth 5.0 points, so a student with mostly AP A’s can finish above 4.0. Schools that cap the weighted GPA say so in their grading policy.
Does an F get the honors or AP bonus?
Not in this calculator: the bonus is added to every grade except an F. Some schools add it only to a C or better, so check your school’s policy and adjust the bonus if needed.
How a weighted GPA works
A weighted GPA starts from the same grade points as an unweighted one, then adds a bonus for harder classes. The common pattern is +0.5 for honors and +1.0 for AP or IB, but each school sets its own, which is why the bonuses are editable in the calculator.
Grade points with and without the bonus

| A- | 3.7 | 4.2 | 4.7 |
| B+ | 3.3 | 3.8 | 4.3 |
| B | 3.0 | 3.5 | 4.0 |
| B- | 2.7 | 3.2 | 3.7 |
| C+ | 2.3 | 2.8 | 3.3 |

| Physical Education | A | 0.5 | Regular | 4.0 | 4.0 | 2.00 | 2.00 |
The 5.5 credits above add up to 20.00 quality points unweighted and 23.00 weighted. That is a 3.64 unweighted GPA and a 4.18 weighted GPA, a difference of 0.55 from three honors and AP courses out of six.
Which GPA do colleges see?
Many high schools report both numbers on the transcript, and policies for using them differ by college. Use the GPA calculator for the unweighted figure too, and check the college’s admissions page for the one it asks for.
