Weighted GPA adds the bonus of honors and AP/IB courses to every grade except an F. Cumulative GPA divides all quality points by all credits: it is not the average of the term GPAs.

Uses the courses and earlier record above as your current GPA.

An estimate, not your official GPA

This calculator uses the standard formula and the scale below. Your school sets its own points, bonuses, rounding, and rules for repeated courses, transfer credits, and pass/fail grades. Check your transcript or registrar for the official number.

There is no official GPA scale. These are the points most U.S. schools use on a 4.0 scale, with the percentages that usually go with each letter. The percentages are a typical chart, not a rule. Edit the points and bonuses to match your school: they are used in every calculation above.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is an unweighted GPA?

An unweighted GPA ignores how hard a class is. Every A is worth 4.0 points, every B 3.0, and so on, so the highest possible GPA is 4.0.

How do I calculate it by hand?

Multiply each grade’s points by the credits, add the results, and divide by the total credits. The sample year has 5.5 credits and 19.70 quality points, so 19.70 ÷ 5.5 = 3.58.

Is an unweighted GPA lower than a weighted one?

It is the same or lower. The two match when you take no honors, AP, or IB courses, and the weighted GPA pulls ahead with each one you add.

What the unweighted GPA measures

The unweighted GPA is the plain 4.0 average of your grades. A B in an AP class counts as 3.0, the same as a B in a regular class, so it shows how you did in your classes but not how demanding they were.

A sample year, course by course

Course, Grade, Credits, Points, Quality points
CourseGradeCreditsPointsQuality points
Algebra IIB13.03.00
English 10A-13.73.70
ChemistryB+13.33.30
World HistoryA14.04.00
Spanish IIA-13.73.70

The 5.5 credits earn 19.70 quality points, so the unweighted GPA is 3.58.

What different grade mixes give

For five courses with the same credits, the GPA is simply the average of the grade points:

Grades, GPA
GradesGPA
All A’s4.00
4 A’s and 1 B3.80
3 A’s and 2 B’s3.60
2 A’s, 2 B’s, and 1 C3.20
1 A, 3 B’s, and 1 C3.00
All B’s3.00
2 B’s and 3 C’s2.40
All C’s2.00

Courses with more credits pull the average toward their grade. Add your own credits in the GPA calculator.
