Rock Belt

Your ship drifts with inertia through a field of space rocks: turn, thrust, and shoot to break them into smaller and smaller pieces. The edges of the screen wrap around, and your best score is saved in your browser.

Arrow keys or A and D to turn, up arrow or W to thrust, Space to shoot, Shift for the emergency jump, and P to pause. On a phone, use the joystick and the buttons.

How to play
  • Turn the ship, thrust, and shoot the rocks. Each large one splits into two medium ones and each medium one into two small ones. The edges of the screen wrap around.
  • The ship keeps drifting by inertia: turn the other way and thrust to slow down. The emergency jump takes you to a random spot, but it can go wrong.
  • From wave 3 an enemy ship crosses and shoots: the big one fires at random and the small one aims better.
  • Some rocks drop power-ups (triple shot, shield, magnet) and crystals that score points. You earn an extra life at 5,000 points and then every 8,000.

How to use it

  1. Press Space, tap the field, or select Start to begin.
  2. Turn the ship with the left and right arrow keys, or A and D, and thrust with the up arrow or W. On a phone, use the joystick: the ship points where you move it and thrusts when you push it far from the center.
  3. Shoot with Space or the big on-screen button. Every large rock splits into two medium ones and every medium rock into two small ones.
  4. If you get surrounded, use Shift or the Jump button for the emergency jump: it sends you to a random spot, but it can go wrong.
  5. Clear every rock to move on to the next wave, and grab the power-ups and crystals that some rocks drop.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do you play Rock Belt?

Your ship turns and thrusts in a field full of space rocks. When you stop thrusting it keeps drifting by inertia, and if you leave through one edge of the screen you come in through the opposite one. You shoot the rocks to split them and win the wave when none are left. You lose one of your three lives if a rock, an enemy shot, or an enemy ship hits you.

How does scoring work, and when do I earn extra lives?

A large rock is worth 20 points, a medium one 50, and a small one 100: small ones are worth more because they are the hardest to hit. The big enemy ship gives 200, the small one 500, each crystal 50, and each power-up 25. You earn an extra life at 5,000 points and then every 8,000, up to a maximum of five lives.

How does the emergency jump work?

With Shift or the Jump button the ship vanishes for a moment and reappears at a random spot in the field, with no speed. It has a three-second recharge and it is not safe: reappearing right next to a rock costs you a life, and about one jump in eight the ship does not survive at all. Use it when there is no other way out.

What do the power-ups and crystals do?

Some rocks drop a power-up when they break. Triple shot fires three shots in a fan for twelve seconds, the shield makes you immune and pushes rocks away for eight, and the magnet pulls nearby crystals and power-ups toward you for fourteen. Crystals are worth 50 points and fade away if you do not collect them in time.

Can I play on my phone?

Yes. On touch screens a joystick and a big fire button, more than 64 pixels wide, appear on their own, along with the jump button. The ship turns toward where the joystick points and thrusts when you push it far from the center. You can turn on auto-fire in the options, and the game pauses by itself if you switch apps.

Where is my record saved, and can I replay a game?

Your best score is saved only in your browser and is never sent to a server; if you clear the site data, it disappears. To replay exactly the same rocks, add a parameter such as ?seed=abc123 to the page address: with the same code and the same moves, the game plays out identically.

Game rules

  • You start with three lives and a brief shield. Each wave brings more large rocks and they move faster, up to a cap at wave eleven.
  • A large rock splits into two medium ones, and each medium one into two small ones. Small rocks are destroyed with a single shot.
  • The edges of the field are connected: whatever leaves through the left comes back in through the right, and the same goes for top and bottom. It works for you, for the rocks, and for your shots.
  • The ship has inertia: if you thrust one way, it keeps going that way even after you turn. Drag is light, so to stop it is best to turn around and thrust the other way.
  • When you lose a life, the ship reappears in the center with a brief shield as soon as there is clear space.

How scoring works

Breaking a large rock scores 20 points, a medium one 50, and a small one 100. The big enemy ship is worth 200 points and the small one 500; each crystal scores 50 and each power-up 25. You earn an extra life at 5,000 points and then every 8,000, up to a maximum of five.

Power-ups and crystals

  • Triple shot: three shots in a fan for twelve seconds, with more shots allowed in the air.
  • Shield: a bubble that pushes away rocks and shots for eight seconds.
  • Magnet: for fourteen seconds it pulls in any crystals and power-ups nearby.
  • Crystals: dropped by rocks, mostly the small ones. They score 50 points and fade away in about seven seconds.

The enemy ship

From wave 3 on, an enemy ship crosses the field every now and then. The big one fires in random directions; the small one is faster, worth more, and aims better, and its aim gets sharper as the waves go by. One of your shots takes it down, but be careful: if you crash into it without a shield, you lose a life.

Sectors

Every three waves you enter a new sector, with a different sky color, a different nebula, another planet in the background, and rocks of another shade. There are four different sectors before they repeat, and the pace keeps going up.

Strategy tips

  • Stay near the center and move no more than you need to: turn, aim, and shoot, and thrust only to dodge.
  • Split the rocks heading toward you first. Each new piece leaves in a different direction, so try to predict where they will spread.
  • Use the connected edges: you can shoot to one side and hit a rock sitting near the opposite edge.
  • Save the emergency jump for when there is no other way out, because you can reappear right next to a rock.
  • The respawn shield is short: use it to get out of the center, not to sit still.

Controls

Left and right arrow keys, or A and D, to turn; up arrow or W to thrust; Space to shoot; Shift for the emergency jump; P or Esc to pause. On a phone a joystick (the ship points where you move it and thrusts when you push it far from the center), a big fire button, and a jump button appear on their own; you can also turn on auto-fire. The game pauses on its own if you switch tabs.
