Word to PDF

Turn your Word document into a PDF and keep its page layout: margins, headings, lists, tables, images, headers, and footers. The text is saved as real text, sharp when zoomed in and easy to search and copy. It works best with simple documents.

Works best with simple documents

The page size, headings, lists, tables, images, headers, and footers are kept. Fonts that are not on your device are replaced with a similar one, and text boxes, equations, and diagrams may not show. Only .docx files are accepted; if you have an old .doc, save it as .docx first.

Step by step

How to use it

  1. Drag your .docx document onto the box or select it to choose a file.
  2. Check the preview: it is the same drawing that becomes the PDF. If something does not look as you expected, read the notices about fonts and special elements.
  3. Choose the quality. “Standard” is enough for reading on screen; “High” and “Maximum” make images and tables sharper, with a heavier file.
  4. Select “Convert to PDF” and download it. The letters stay as vector text (sharp when zoomed in and searchable). You can also use “Print” and choose “Save as PDF.”
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is my document uploaded to a server?

No. The document is read and converted inside your browser, on your own device. Neither the file nor its contents leave it, and you do not need to sign up.

How faithful is the result compared with Word?

Very close for simple documents: the page size (Letter, A4, or any other), margins, heading styles, lists, shaded tables, images, headers, footers, and page breaks are respected. If the text runs on without breaks, the tool splits it into pages and repeats the header and footer; the exact break can differ a little from Word. What can change are fonts that are not installed on your device (for example Calibri or Cambria outside Windows and Mac), which are replaced with a similar one, and some special elements: text boxes, equations, SmartArt diagrams, charts, and columns. The tool warns you if it detects any of them.

Can I select and copy the text in the PDF?

Yes. The letters are saved as real (vector) text: they look sharp at any size and you can select, search, and copy them with your PDF viewer. Images, tables, and shading are kept as they are. If a very complex document does not look right, you can turn off “Vector text” to save each page as an image.

Why is the file heavier than the original?

The text is stored as vectors and weighs very little, but photos, shading, and tables are saved as a background image to keep their look. With “Standard” quality the size is moderate; “Maximum” triples the resolution of that background and weighs quite a bit more. If you need it lighter, you can run it through “Compress PDF” afterward.

Does it work with old .doc files, .odt, or .rtf?

No. It only works with the current Word format (.docx, and also .docm, .dotx, and .dotm). To convert an old .doc, open it in Word or Google Docs and save it as .docx.

Can I convert password-protected documents?

No. Word documents protected with a password are encrypted and cannot be read until you open them in Word. Remove the password there and try again.

When this tool is a good fit

Use it to turn a letter, a report, a résumé, or an assignment into a PDF without installing software or uploading the document to someone else's site. It is especially useful when the file has personal or sensitive data: here nothing leaves your device.

What is kept and what can change

  • Kept: page size and margins, headings, bold, italics, and underline, colors, bulleted and numbered lists, tables with borders and shading, images, headers and footers, and page breaks.
  • Real text: the letters are saved as vector text, so they stay sharp when zoomed in, print with quality, and can be selected, searched, and copied.
  • May change: fonts your device does not have are replaced with a similar one, so the text can take a little more or less room. Text boxes, equations, SmartArt diagrams, and charts may not show.

Vector text or page as an image

  • Vector text (recommended): the text is drawn as real text, and images, tables, and shading are kept as a background. It is the sharpest and lightest result for simple and medium documents.
  • Page as an image: if you turn off “Vector text,” each sheet is saved whole as an image with an invisible layer for searching and copying. It helps with very complex documents where exact position matters more than sharp letters.
