Frequently asked questions
What size is a US passport photo?
A US passport photo is a square of 2x2 inches. As a digital file, that means at least 600x600 px and at most 1200x1200 px. This page loads 600x600 px with a 300 dpi print label.
Does this make the photo valid for a passport?
It gets the size right. Other rules still apply: plain background, neutral expression, and the position of your head in the frame. Check the current requirements of the office or website where you will submit it.
Is the photo cropped to fill the square?
Yes. The fit is set to “Fill”, so the image covers the whole square and what does not fit is cropped, centered. If your face gets cut off, switch to “Fit” to see the whole image.
Passport photo size in pixels
A US passport photo is 2x2 inches. For a digital upload, that translates to pixels based on the print resolution: at 300 dpi, 2 inches is 600 px, so a 600x600 px square prints at 2x2 in. This page loads those values and the 300 dpi label.
Check the framing before you download
The tool crops your photo to a square so it fills the frame. Look at the preview: your face should be centered with some space above your head. If your photo is very wide, you may want to crop it first with the crop image tool. For other sizes, go back to resize image.
